HerbertaskedNightingaletomanageagroupofnursesthatwouldgototreatthewoundedsoldiers.Whentheygot
there,thedoctorswereunwelcomingbecausetheydidnotwanttoworkwithfemalenurses.However,asthenumber
ofpatientsincreased,thedoctorsneededtheirhelp.Thenursesbroughtsupplies,nutritiousfoodandcleanlinesstothe
militaryhospital.Nightingalewasknownforcarryingalampandcheckingonthesoldiersatnight,sotheygaveher
thenickname“theLadywiththeLamp”.Withinsixmonths,Nightingaleandherteamtransformedthehospital,and
thedeathratewentdownsignificantlybecauseoftheirwork.
WhenNightingalereturnedfromthewar,shecontinuedtoimprovetheconditionsofhospitals.Shewrote150
