Thecarotenoids,inparticular,whichgivefruitsandvegetablestheirbright

throatandnosehadalreadybeenlinkedwiththeuseofsnuff,cigarsandpipes

Thegreat20thcenturycigaretteadvertisingcampaignbeganrightafterWorld
WarI,capitalizingonthepatriotismthataccompaniedthewareffort.Theads
oftenfeaturedtestimonials(证明)bymoviestars,athletesandevendoctors,
whowentsofarastosuggestthatgoodhealthandgoodlookswerethe
rewardsofsmoking.Somecigarettemanufacturersmadeparticularlybold
healthclaimsfortheirproducts,advertisingthattheirbrandcouldsteadythe
nervesorevenpreventsmoker'scough.
Theadvertisingcampaignsweresoeffectivethatby1939,aFortune
magazinesurveyshowedthat53percentofalladultAmericanmensmoked
cigarettes(asdid66percentofthoseunder40).
Thewidespreaduseofcigarettesamongwomenlaggedsome25to30years
behindthatofmen.Althoughafewdatingwomenhadsmokedcigaretteseven
beforeWorldWarI,womendidnottakeupsmokinginlargenumbersuntil
the1940s.DuringWorldWarII,cigaretteswereagainsenttreetoAmerican
military.Athome,cigaretteadvertisingwastargetedatfemales,whohad
takenovertraditionalmalejobs.
FirstClues
Unknowntothesmokingpublic,animpressiveamountofspeculation—and
somehardscientificevidence—whichlinkedsmokingwithdiseasehad
emergedbetween1920and1940.Tobaccocompanieschosetoignorethis
