Itgivesmegreatpleasuretointroducethis58theditionoftheAnnualStatisticalBulletin(ASB).

Sinceitsfirstpublicationin1965,theASBhasevolvedintooneoftheenergyindustry’smostauthoritativecollationsofoil,gasandenergydata—anindispensablereferencetoolforanalystsandacademics,policymakersandindustryspecialists.TheASB’severincreasingreadershipandonlineviewershipreflectsitsstatusasahighlyrespectedandregularlycitedsourceonoilmarketdataandconditions.

Theneedforreliabledataaccuracytosupportinformedpolicyandforecastshasneverbeengreater.Thisisparticularlythecaseinthesphereofpublicdiscussionsandpolicyformationrelatedtotheenergytransitions.Energyasatopic,socentraltoourdailylives,canoftenelicitstrongopinions,whichinsomecasesfeedintopolicyformation.OPECfirmlyholdsthebeliefthatpolicyneedstobegroundedinfact,realityandareadingofeventsastheyare,ratherthanhowwemaywishthemtobe.

Inthismanner,accuratedataandimpartialoilmarketanalysisplaysacrucialroleinthepolicymakingprocess.OPECisfocusedonensuringthequalityandreliabilityofdataresearch.TheASBisavitalcomponentofOPECfulfillingitsmissionandcontributingtooilmarketstability,intheinterestsofproducers,consumersandtheglobaleconomy.

TheASBistheoutcomeofhardandlabour-intensiveworkinvolvinganalysts,researchersandstatisticians,bothattheOPECSecretariatandourMemberCountries.Thefactwehaveproducedanotherstellareditionofthisflagshippublicationisacollaborativeachievementandanoutcomeofgreatteamwork.

IwouldliketoexpressmysincereappreciationtothestaffattheOPECSecretariat—andallthecolleaguesandofficialsinourMemberCountries—fortheircontinuoushardworktomakethispublicationpossible.

TheAnnualStatisticalBulletin(ASB),oneoftheflagshippublicationsoftheOrganizationofthePetroleumExportingCountries(OPEC),providesdetailedandcomprehensivetimeseriesdatacoveringallchainsoftheoilindustry,rangingfromtheexplorationtothetransportationsegments.

TheASBisdistinctiveinprovidingcomprehensivestatisticaldataonoilandgasactivitiesineachofthe13OPECMemberCountries:Algeria,Angola,Congo,EquatorialGuinea,Gabon,theIslamicRepublicofIran,Iraq,Kuwait,Libya,Nigeria,SaudiArabia,theUnitedArabEmiratesandVenezuela.Inaddition,itprovidesvaluabledataformanyothercountriesgroupedbygeographicalregion,andcoversthemajoreconomiczonesallovertheworld.

ThecurrentversionoftheASB(ASB2023)comprisesdatauptotheendof2022,withthefollowinghighlights:

Worldcrudeoilproductionincreasedin2022by3.46millionbarrels/day(mb/d)or5.0%,y-o-y,markingthesecondconsecutiveannualincreasesince2020,toaverageof72.80mb/d.OPECcrudeoilproductionroseby2.53mb/d,y-o-y,or9.6%,whilecrudeproductionbynon-OPECcountriesroseby0.92mb/d,or2.1%.

Worldoildemandgrewby2.49mb/d,y-o-y,orby2.6%toreach99.56mb/din2022.Oildemandgrew,y-o-y,inalmosteveryregionandthelargestgainswererecordedforOECDAmericas,OECDEurope,India,OtherAsia,theMiddleEastandAfrica.OildemandinOPECMemberCountrieswasbullishin2022,gaining0.57mb/dor6.9%,y-o-y.Distillatesandgasolineaccountedforaround54.9%of2022worldoildemandwithanupwardtrendduringtheyears2021and2022.Residualfueloilrequirementswereabout6.7%oftotaloildemandin2022.

Worldrefinerycapacityincreasedin2022byanadditional0.50mb/dtostandat101.77mb/d.TheNon-OECDregion,particularlytheMiddleEastandChinarecordedrefiningcapacityadditions,whiletheOECDdeclinedforthefourthconsecutiveyearin2022.Globally,refinerythroughputincreasedby2.19mb/dor2.7%toreach83.84mb/din2022,amidrobustoildemand.

OPECMemberCountriesexportedanaverageof21.39mb/dofcrudeoilin2022,astrongincreaseofabout1.73mb/d,y-o-y,or8.8%,remainingslightlybelowpre-pandemiclevels.Followingthepatternseeninpreviousyears,thebulkofcrudeoilfromOPECMemberCountries—15.20mb/dor71.1%—wasexportedtoAsia.Considerablevolumesofcrudeoil—about3.86mb/d—werealsoexportedtoOECDEuropein2022,comparedwith3.27mb/drecordedin2021.OECDAmericasimported1.07mb/dofcrudeoilfromOPECMemberCountries,whichwasabout0.13mb/d,or13.9%abovethe2021volumes.ExportsofpetroleumproductsfromOPECMemberCountriesaveraged4.46mb/dduring2022,upbyaround0.43mb/d,or10.6%,comparedto2021.ImportsofpetroleumproductsbyOPECMemberCountriesaveragedat1.67mb/din2022,roughly0.17mb/d,or11.1%,higherthanin2021.

Worldprovencrudeoilreservesstoodat1,564billionbarrels(bnb)attheendof2022,higherby17bnb,or1.1%fromthe2021levels.ProvencrudeoilreservesinOPECMemberCountriesincreasedmarginally

to1,244bnbattheendof2022,followingadeclineduring2021.Attheendof2022,worldprovennaturalgasreservesincreasedby2.4%toapproximately210.06trillionstandardcubicmetres(trscum).ProvennaturalgasreservesinOPECMemberCountriesstoodat75.12trscumattheendof2022,up1.2%fromthelevelattheendof2021.

TheOPECReferenceBasketaveraged$100.08/binnominaltermsduring2022,upfrom$69.89/bin

2021,anincreaseof$30.19/b,or43.2%.Theaveragevolatilitywas$12.33/b,or12.3%,relativetotheyearlyaverage.
