Thesetinyinsectscan'trecyclenearlyenoughplastictoputa

significantdentintheproblem.Still,theirresourcefuluseofplastic

illustrateshowwidespreadplasticpollutionhasbecome,andhowsome

wildlifeisadaptingtoit.

Oneofthebeestheystudied,theleafcutterbee,normallybitesoff

piecesofleavesandflowerstomakeitsnests.Buttheresearchersfound

thatthreeofeightbrood(幼蜂)cellscontainedpiecesofplasticbags,

replacing23percentofthecutleavesineachcellonaverage.

InaseparatestudyconductedinArgentinabetween2017and2018,

researchersstudyingchicory(菊苣)pollinatorsfoundanestmadeentirely

ofplastic.It'sthefirstknownexampleofsuchconstructionworldwide.

Theybelievethebeesthatmadethenestsareleafcutterbees,asinthe

exampleabove.

Plasticcanhavebothadvantagesanddisadvantagesinbees'nests,

thestudysuggests.Thebeesthatusedbitsofplasticbagsdidn'tsufferany

parasite(寄生虫)outbreaks,forexample,echoinga1970studyof

leafcutterbeesthatnestedinsideplasticdrinkingstraws.Thosebeeswere

neverattackedbyparasiticwasps(寄生蜂),whichwereunableto

sting(刺)throughtheplastic,butupto90percentoftheirbroodsstilldied

becausetheplasticdidn'tletenoughmoisture(水分)escape,encouraging

thegrowthofdangerousmold(霉菌).Theplasticbagsalsodidn'tstick

togetheraswellasleavesdo,theresearchersnote,andeasilyflakedoff

whentheywereinspected.Butthebeestookstepstominimizethis

structuraldeficiency,locatingtheirplasticpiecesonlyneartheendofa

seriesofbroodcells.

It'sstillunclearwhyexactlyleafcutterbeesareusingplastic,butas

non-biodegradablematerialscontinuepilingupinnature,thiskindof
