Jameshasalwayswantedtobeaplaywright,andfinallywithhisinitiativeawayfromthetheaterandended.Jameshadbeenworriedaboutthesuccessofhisnewplay,GayTomwell,butbecausehewassonervousthathedidnotcatchtherightopportunity.Heisnotgoodatdealingwiththetheater.Thebooktellsthestorythatonenightwhenheapproachedthetheater,OscarWildeidealhusbandisstaged,hedecidedtogiveuptowatchthegaudygaywandimescriptperformance.Becausehethinksthesepeopleinthetheaterseemtoenjoythepleasureoftheirown,hefeltinhislifeheneverhadthislook.Hedidnotknowinthesesohappy,sotriumphant,sohappyamongthepeopleHowtospendthatthreehours.SoJameswentbackagain.

MostofthetensioninJamesslifecomesfromhisalienationofwhathecherishes.Infact,hehasenteredtheupperclassinEurope,richwritertobeabletocontacthimandbeproudof,buthestillfeelthatheisanoutsider:isabachelor,thereisatendencytohomosexuality,althoughhesuppressedthisdesire.AtthesametimehewasanAmerican,becausethentheUnitedStateshasjustdeveloped,advocatingEuropeancultureandworshipofEuropeanswasakindofatmosphereoftheAmericanupperclass.

Hefelthumiliated,begantolookawayfromthepublicsattention,reducedcontactwithfamilyandfriends,traveledtoRomeandFlorence,whereheintendedtospendtherestofhislifequietly.AndlaterinEnglandtobuyahousewithagarden,sosettleddownanddedicatedtowriting.Between1902and1905,Jamespublishedthreeofthe20thcenturysmostpromisingnovels:PigeonWing,Envoys,GoldenBowl.In1915JamesjoinedtheBritish.Jamesswritingisveryfocusedandverydevoted,heputthenovelasasubtlecomprehens
