Theyinvited18dogownerstobringtheirpetstothelabalongwithfiveobjectstheanimalsknewwell.Theseincluded
balls,slippers,Frisbees,rubbertoys,leadsandotheritems.Atthelab,theownerswereinstructedtosaywordsforobjects
theirdogsalreadyknew.Then,theownersheldupeitherthematchingobjectoradifferentonewhilesmallmetaldiscs
harmlesslyattachedtothedogs'headsmeasuredbrainactivityinaprocessknownaselectroencephalography(EEG).
UsingEEG,theresearchersaimedtoobserveanyvariancesinbrainactivitywhenthedog'sownermentionedaspecific
object,suchasa"ball”,butdisplayedadifferentitem,likeastick,asopposedtowhenboththespokenwordandthepresented
objectmatched.Thiswasindeedthecase,withtheresultsbeingstrongestwhentheobjectwasveryfamiliartothedog.That's
similartowhatresearchershaveseeninhumansandiswidelyacceptedasevidencethattheyunderstandthewords.
