focusuponhim,hisoutlinesaredim.Thismaybe
somewhatofanartisticintention,butIthinkitis
mistaken.Couldn'thebephysicallydescribedas
distinctlyastheothers,andcouldn'tyouaddoneor
twocharacteristicsliketheuseofthatphrase”old
sport“一notverbal,butphysicalones,perhaps.I
thinkthatforsomereasonorotherareadergetsan
ideathatGatsbyisamucholdermanthanheis.But
thiswouldbeavoidedifonhisfirstappearancehe
wasseenasvividlyasDaisyandTomare,for

weakenedifyoumadehimso.
TheotherpointisalsoaboutGatsby:hiscareer
mustremainmysterious,ofcourse.Butintheend
youmakeitprettyclearthathiswealthcame
throughhisconnectionwithWolfsheim.Nowalmost
allreadersaregoingtobepuzzledbyhishavingall
thiswealthanddemandanexplanation.Togivea
distinctanddefiniteonewouldbe,ofcourse,
completelyabsurd.Itdidoccurtome,though,that
youmighthereandthereinsertsomephrases,and
possiblyincidentsthatwouldsuggestthathewasin
someactivewaymysteriouslyengaged.Youdohave
himcalledonthetelephone,butcouldn'thebeseen
onceortwiceconsultingathispartieswithpeopleof
somesortofmysterioussignificance,fromthe
political,thegambling,thesportingworld,or
whateveritmaybe.Ifsomesortofbusinessactivity
ofhisweresimplysuggested,itwouldlendfurther
probabilitytothatpartofthestory.
Thereisoneotherpoint:ingivingdeliberately
Gatsby'sbiography,whenhegivesittothenarrator,
youdowithdrawfromthemethodofthenarrativein
somedegree,forotherwisealmosteverythingistold,
andbeautifullytold,intheregularflowofit.Butyou
can'tavoidthebiographyaltogether.Ithoughtyou
mightfindwaystoletthetruthofsomeofhisclaims
likehisarmycareercomeout,bitbybit,inthe
courseofactualnarrative.
Thegeneralbrilliantqualityofthebookmakesme
ashamedtomakeeventhesecriticisms.Theamount
ofmeaningyougetintoasentence,thedimensions
andintensityoftheimpressionyoumakea
paragraphcarry,aremostextraordinary.Itseems,
inreading,amuchshorterbookthanitis,butit
carriesthemindthroughaseriesofexperiencesthat
onewouldthinkwouldrequireabookofthreetimes
itslength.
