Attheageoftwelveyears,thehumanbodyisatitsmostvigorous.Ithas

self-evident,likethecoolingofahotkettleorthewearing-outofapair

organismssuchastrees,oreventheuniverseitself,mustinthenatureof

things"wearout".

Mostanimalswecommonlyobservedoinfactageaswedo,ifgiventhe

chancetolivelongenough;andmechanicalsystemslikeawoundwatch,

orthesun,doinfactanoutofenergyinaccordancewiththesecondlaw

ofthermodynamics(热力学)(whetherthewholeuniversedoessoisa

mootpointatpresent).Butthesearenotanalogoustowhathappens

whenmanages.Arun-downwatchisstillawatchandcanberewound.

Anoldwatch,bycontrast,becomessowornandunreliablethatit
