1.WhyAmericanCultureisUnique

Americancultureisuniquebecauseitisnurtured,formedanddevelopedunder

certainconditions,whicharecharacteristicallyAmerican.Themajorfactors

contributingtothemakingofthisnewnationandtheformingofanewculturearethe

hardenvironment,ethnicdiversity(多民族)andpluralreligion,whichisquite

differentfromothernationsintheworld.Whatismore,theseelementsarestill

influencingtheAmericanculture.

RoughEnvironment

TheearlyimmigrantswhowereEnglishPuritanssettleddowninnortheastpartof

American.Theenvironmenttherewasveryroughbuttheybelievedthepoorland

couldpurifytheirmindsotheychosetheplacealongthecoast.From1607to1892,

frontierswerepushedfurtherwest.TheAmericanfrontierconsistedoftherelatively

unsettledregionsoftheUnitedStates,usuallyfoundinthewesternpartofthecountry.

Thefrontiersmenlookedforalandofrichresourcesandalandofpromise,opportunity

andfreedom.Actuallytheylookedforabetterlife.Soindividualism,self-reliance,and

equalityofopportunityhaveperhapsbeenthevaluesmostcloselyassociatedwiththe

frontierheritageofAmerican.

EthnicDiversity

ThepopulationoftheUnitedStatesincludesalargevarietyofethnicgroups

comingfrommanyraces,nationalities,andreligions.PeoplerefertotheUnitedStates

asHmeltingpot“andthedominantpeopleareBritish.Americanismadeupof

WASP+MM,thatis,White,AngloSaxon,ProtestantsplusMiddleClassandMale.In

history,peoplefromdifferentcountriesintheworldrushedtoAmericanthreetimes.

TheybroughttheirownculturetoAmericaandlaterondifferentculturesweremixed

together.ThustheuniqueAmericancultureisformed,acommonculturallifewith

commonlysharedvalues.

PluralReligion

ThefundamentalAmericanbeliefinindividualfreedomandtherightof

individualstopracticetheirownreligionisatthecenterofreligiousexperienceinthe

UnitedStates.Thegreatdiversityofethnicbackgroundshasproducedreligious

pluralism;almostallofthereligionsoftheworldarenowpracticedintheUnited

States.Christianity(基督教)isthedominantreligioninAmericanandProtestant(新

教)ispredominate(主导).AnyindividualsareequalbeforeGodandtheybelievethey

cancommunicatedirectlytoGodsotheycansharethesameidea.Underthe

protestant,manynewonesareformedanddifferentexplanationsproducedifferent

sectsofreligion.ChurchesareindependentandAmericanreligionisnolongerreligion

seculars.Theinstitutionpermitsthepracticeofreligionandthepoliticalpoweris

separateformreligion.SotherearemorereligionsinAmericathaninothercountries.

CurrentInfluence

Nowadays,wecanseethecontinualinfluenceofthethreeelementsinthecurrent

Americansociety.Americanfamilyistypicallyparentsandtheirunmarriedchildren.

Middle-agedandelderlypeoplegenerallydonotlivewiththeirmarriedchildren.

ManyAmericansliveinmobilehomeswhicharebuiltwithwheels.Theycanbe

moved.ThepeopleinAmericanhaveaverystrongdesiretostartanewlifeinanew

place.Quiteanumberofpeoplechangeresidenceseveryyear.TheaverageAmerican

movesfourteentimesinhislifetime.Thecouragetotrysomethingnewhasbeenan

Americancharacteristic.Americandemocracymeansmajorityrule,butitalsomeans

protectionofminorityrights.ThereiscertainfreedomwhichtheUnitedStates

promisestoallitscitizensandmembersofminoritygroupcannotbedeniedthese

rightsbyavoteofthemajority.Americansalsoliketobeinvolvedinmany

challengingactivitiesandsportstoshowtheiradventurousspirits.Alloftheseare

affectedbytheheritageoftheAmericanhistory.

Fromthefactsabove,wecanseeAmericancultureisuniquewhichwas

cultivated,formedanddevelopedbythemainthreefactors,roughenvironment,ethnic

diversityandpluralreligionandstillisaffectedanddeterminedbythemnow.

2.Individualismvs.Collectivism

Individualismistheoppositeofcollectivism;togethertheyformoneofthe

dimensionsofnationalcultures.Individualismstandsforasocietyinwhichtheties

betweenindividualsareloose:everyoneisexpectedtolookafterhimselforherselfand

hisorherimmediatefamilyonly.

Collectivismstandsforasocietyinwhichpeoplefrombirthonwardsareintegrated

intostrongcohesivein-groups,whichthroughoutpeople'slifetimecontinuetoprotect

theminexchangeforunquestioningloyalty.

IndividualisticcultureslikeUSAandFrancearemoreself-centeredandemphasize

mostlyontheirindividualgoals.Peoplefromindividualisticculturestendtothinkonly

ofthemselvesasindividualsandas'T'distinctivefromotherpeople.Theymakejusta

littledifferentbetweenin-groupandout-groupcommunication(USA).Theyprefer

clarityintheirconversationstocommunicatemoreeffectivelyandcomeingeneral

directlytothepointliketheFinnsandAmericansaredoing.

Peopleinindividualisticculturesemphasizetheirsuccess/achievementsinjobor

privatewealthandaiminguptoreachmoreand/orabetterjobposition.Especiallyin

theUSAthefightaboutjobsandtryingtoclimbupinthehierarchyladderis

somethingverycommonthere.Itjustcountstogettherelesscaringwhowillleft

behindone.Inbusinesstheytrytoimprovetheirconnectionsandtogainmorevalue

outofthem,notforestablishingagoodrelationshipbutjusttobeinvolvedina

calculativeway.Employeesareexpectedtodefendtheirinterestsandtopromote

themselveswheneverpossible.

AsiancollectivistcultureslikeChina,viewotherpeoplewithlesscollectivistic

philosophyascoldandnotsupportive.Collectivisticcultureshaveagreatemphasize

ongroupsandthinkmoreintermsof"we”.Harmonyandloyaltywithinacompanyis

veryimportantandshouldalwaysbemaintainedandconfrontationshouldbeavoided.

InChinaitisoutofquestiontodisagreewithsomeone'sopinioninpublic.Youwilldo

thatinamoreprivateandpersonalatmospheretoprotectapersonfromthe"lossof

face,\Incollectivisticculturesadirectconfrontationwillbealwaysavoided.
