TounderstandLiberman'sresearch,weshouldknowjusthowwehear.Whensoundentersourcars,it'spicked

upbyso-calledhaircells.Theychangesoundwavestosignalsthatarecarriedbynervestothebrain.Peoplecanlose

haircellsforanumberofreasons—loudnoise,somedrugsoraging—andourhearingdegrades(退化)asthesehair

cellsarelost.Thatlossiswhatispickedupbyastandardtestcalledanaudiogramthatmeasureshowsoftanoisewe

canhearinaquietenvironment.

Liberman'sworksuggeststhere'sanotherkindofdamagethatdoesn'tkilloffhaircells,butleadstoexperiences
