ReadingAButhowarestudentsusingthisgreatwealthofresources?Tobetterunderstandcollegestudents’studyhabits,wewantedtoexplorehowandwhytheyusetheirschool’slibrary.So,inastudentengagementsurveyweconductedintheSpringof2015,weasked:Whatdoyoudowhenyou’reatyourcollegelibrary?Nearly3,000studentsresponded.Herearetheirtopfourreasonsforspendingtimethere.23ReadingAA.Studyalone.Byfarthemostpopularresponseat77%,theclearmajorityofoursurveyedstudentsheadtothelibrarytofocusontheirstudiesbythemselves.Tous,thisresponseshowsthat,nomatterwhatkindsofresourcesareofferedbythelibrary,itslearningspaceis(andwillprobablyalwaysbe)regardedasagreatplacetogetseriousaboutschoolwork.Italsomeansthat,duringpeakstudyperiods(suchasthefinalsweek),studentswoulddowelltogettothelibraryearlytosecurethestudyspotoftheirchoice!45ReadingAB.Usetheonlinedatabases.Morethanhalf(51%)ofthestudentssaidthatthey’reatthelibrarytousetheonlinedatabases,indicatingthatagoodportionoftheirresearchworkiscompletedatthelibrary.Unfortunately,manystudentswilloftenfindthemselvesinfrontofaloomingdeadlineandaclosedlibrary.Orperhapstheycan’tmakeittothecampuslibraryforotherreasons(suchasparentingresponsibilities,alackoftransportationoptions,oraneedtotravelawayfromhome).Theycanaccesstheircollege’sdatabasesfromtheirowncomputer.Typically,allthey’llneedisInternetaccessandausernameandpassword.67ReadingAC.Usereferencematerials.Whetherthey’reinneedofgeneralresourcessuchasencyclopediasanddictionaries,specializedpublicationssuchasfield-specificbibliographicalguidesandindexes,orotherreferencesthatsimplyaren’tavailableinelectronicformats,studentsvisitthelibrarytoaccessnon-circulatingmaterialsthattheyneedtocompletetheirprojects.8ReadingAEvenso,giventhatonly39%ofstudentsstatingthattheyusethereferencematerials,werecognizethatmanystudentsmaynotevenbeawareofthesematerials’existence.(Or,iftheydo,theymaynotknowthevaluableroletheycanplayintheresearchprocess.)Ifyourcourseincludesaresearchproject,encourageyourstudentstomakeuseofthem.Studentsmayalsoappreciatebeingremindedthat,iftheyaren’tsurehowtousethesehelpfulreferencetools,theircampuslibrarianwillbeabletoassistthem.9ReadingATofurtherguideyourstudents,youmayevenwishtomakeabibliographythatliststhereferencematerialsthatwouldbeofmostusetothem.Butfirst,youmightwanttocheckyourlibrary’swebsite;inmanycases,thelibrarianshavealreadycreatedsubjectguidesthatdescribetheresourcesavailableforspecificfieldsanddisciplines.Yourlibrarianmayalsobeabletocreateacourseguidethatliststhereferencematerials(andotherresources)thatsuitthespecificneedsofyourclass.10ReadingAD.Meettheirstudygroups.Whetherit’sfortheluxuryofhavingabigtable,theconvenienceofaccessingnearbyscholarlyandreferencematerials,orthesimplicityofhavingacentralplacetomeetthat’snottheirownhomes,thelibraryisapopularplaceforstudentstogatherforstudyandgroupprojects.Morethanonethird(34%)ofstudentssaidthat’swhytheyvisittheirlibrary.11Areyouassigninggroupprojectsforyourcourse,ordoyourecommendthatstudentsgettogetheringroupstostudy?Ifyouknowstudentswillusethelibraryasameetingspace,advisethemtoreserveastudyroom.Theretheycantalkoverthedetailsoftheirprojectswithoutworryingthattheirconversationisdisturbingotherstudents.12ReadingAOfcourse,thecollegelibraryoffersmanybenefitsbeyondthefourexploredabove.Theycanaccessdatabasesfromhome,requestbooksthroughinterlibraryloan,chatwithanonlinelibrarian,orusethelibrary’swebsitetodiscovervideos,tutorials,andothermaterialsthatwillhelpthemconducttheirresearchefficientlyandeffectively.13ReadingBIgrewupinlibraries,oratleastitfeelsthatway.MyfamilylivedinthesuburbsofCleveland,aboutamilefromthebrick-facedBertramWoodsBranchoftheShakerHeightsPublicLibrarysystem.Throughoutmychildhood,startingwhenIwasveryyoung,mymotherdrovemethereacoupleoftimesaweek.GrowingUpintheLibraryLearningandRelearningWhatItMeanstoHaveaBookonBorrowedTime1ReadingBWewalkedintogether,but,assoonaswepassedthroughthedoor,wesplitup,eachheadingtoourfavoritesection.ThelibrarymighthavebeenthefirstplacethatIwasevergivenindependence.EvenwhenIwasmaybefourorfiveyearsold,Iwasallowedtogooffonmyown.Then,afterawhile,mymotherandIreunitedatthecheckoutcounterwithourfinds.Together,wewaitedasthelibrarianpulledouteachdatecardand,withaloudchunk-chunk,stampedacrookedduedateonit,belowascoreofpreviouscrookedduedatesthatbelongedtootherpeople,othertimes.Ourvisitswereneverlongenoughforme—thelibrarywassobountiful.Ilovedwanderingaroundtheshelves,scanningthespinesofthebooksuntilsomethinghappenedtocatchmyeye.Thosetripsweredreamy,frictionlessinterludesthatpromisedIwouldleavericherthanIarrived.Onthewayhome,Ilovedhavingthebooksstackedonmylap,pressingmeundertheirsolid,warmweight,theirMylarcoversstickingtomythighs.Itwassuchathrillleavingaplacewiththingsyouhadn’tpaidfor;suchathrillanticipatingthenewbookswewouldread.WeboththoughtthatallthelibrariansattheBertramWoodsbranchwerebeautiful.Forafewminutes,wediscussedtheirbeauty.2ReadingBWhenIwasolder,Iusuallywalkedtothelibrarybymyself,luggingasmanybooksasIcouldcarry.Occasionally,Ididgowithmymother,andthetripremainedasenchantedasithadbeenwhenIwassmall.EvenwhenIwasinmylastyearofhighschoolandcoulddrivetothelibrary,mymotherandIstillwenttogethernowandthen,andthetripunfoldedexactlyasitusedto,withallthesamebeatsandpausesandcommentsandreveries,thesamepensiverhythm.Mymotherdiedtwoyearsago,andsincethen,whenImissher,Iliketopictureusinthecartogether,goingforonemoremagnificenttriptoBertramWoods.3ReadingBMyfamilywasbigonthelibrary.Wewereverymuchareadingfamily,butweweremoreaborrow-a-book-from-the-libraryfamilythanabookshelves.full-of-booksfamily.Myparentsvaluedbooks,buttheyhadgrownupintheDepression,awareofthequicksilvernatureofmoney,andtheyhadlearnedthehardwaythatyoushouldn’tbuywhatyoucouldborrow.Becauseofthatfrugality,orperhapsdespiteit,theyalsobelievedthatyoushouldreadabookfortheexperienceofreadingit.Youshouldn’treaditinordertohaveanobjectthathadtobehousedandlookedafterforever,amementoofthepurposeforwhichitwasobtained.Thereadingofthebookwasajourney.Therewasnoneedforsouvenirs.4ReadingBBythetimeIwasborn,myparents’financialcircumstanceswerecomfortable,andtheylearnedhowtosplurgealittle,buttheirDepression-eramentalityadheredstubbornlytocertaineconomies,whichincludednotbuyingbooksthatcouldbeobtainedeasilyfromthelibrary.Ouruncrowdedbookshelvesathomehadseveralsetsofencyclopedias(anexampleofsomethingnoteasilyborrowed)andanassortmentofotherbooksthat,foronereasonoranother,myparentshadendedupbuying.Therewerealsosometravelguides,somecoffee-tablebooks,afewofmyfather’slawbooks,andadozenorsonovelsthatwereeithergiftsorsomehowmanagedtojustifybeingownedoutright.5ReadingBWhenIleftforcollege—IwenttotheUniversityofMichigan—oneofthemanywaysIdifferentiatedmyselffrommyparentswasthatIwentwildforowningbooks.Ithinkbuyingtextbookswaswhatgotmegoing.AllIknowisthatIlostmyappreciationfortheslowpaceofmakingyourwaythroughalibraryandforhavingbooksonborrowedtime.Iwantedtoh
