¡¡¡¡AtthefirstdayofNewYear,IwassoexcitedthatIgotupveryearlyinthemorning.ButMotherwasearlierthanme,andshehadgottenthebreakfastready.Dumplings,that'smyfavourite.Afterthewonderfulbreakfast,Ilefthomewithmyparentstovisitourrelatives.Ontheway,Isaid"HappyNewYear"toeveryonethatImetandtheyallsaidthatbacktome.Everyoneishappyandfriendly.Inmyrelatives'house,theypreparedmanysweetsandsnacksforvisitors.Theyareallverydelicious.ThemoreexcitingthingwasthatIgotsomemoneyfrommyrelatives.Ihadafinedayinmyrelatives'family.

¡¡¡¡TheSpringFestival,alsoknowasthelunarNewYear,isthegreatesttraditionalfestival.ItisusuallyatimebetweenlateJanuaryorearlyFebruary,whichmeansrestandrelaxationbetweenwinterandspringafterayear'stoil,andmeanscelebrationaswell.BeforetheSpringFestival,peoplecleantheirhouse,putredcoupletsontheirgates,andsetofffirecrackers,accordingtofairytale,fordrivingademon,namedNianaway.OntheeveoftheSpringFestival,aget-togetherbanquetisamust,andthemostpopularfoodisDumpling,whichissupposedtobringgoodfortune.Onthefirstdayofthenewyear,everybodywearsnewclothesandgreetsrelativesandfriendswithbowsandcongratulationswishingeachotherluckyduringthenewyear.

¡¡¡¡ChineseNewYearstartswiththeNewMoon(ÐÂÔÂ)onthefirstdayofthenewyearandendsonthefullmoon(ÂúÔÂ)15dayslater.The15thdayofthenewyeariscalledtheLanternFestival(ÔªÏü½Ú),whichiscelebratedatnightwithlanterndisplaysandchildrencarryinglanternsinaparade.

¡¡¡¡TheChinesecalendarisbasedonacombinationoflunarandsolarmovements.Thelunarcycle(ÔÂÔËÖÜÆÚ)isabout29.5days.Inorderto"catchup"withthesolarcalendartheChineseinsertanextramonthonceeveryfewyears(sevenyearsoutofa19-yearcycle).Thisisthesameasaddinganextradayonleapyear(ÈòÄê).Thisiswhy,accordingtothesolarcalendar,theChineseNewYearfallsonadifferentdateeachyear.

¡¡¡¡NewYear'sEveandNewYear'sDayarecelebratedasafamilyaffair,atimeofreunionandthanksgiving.ThecelebrationwastraditionallyhighlightedwithareligiousceremonygiveninhonorofHeavenandEarth(ÍòÎï),thegodsofthehouseholdandthefamilyancestors.

¡¡¡¡Thesacrificetotheancestors,themostvitalofalltherituals(ÒÇʽ),unitedthelivingmemberswiththosewhohadpassedaway.Departedrelativesarerememberedwithgreatrespectbecausetheywereresponsibleforlayingthefoundationsforthefortuneandgloryofthefamily.

¡¡¡¡ThepresenceoftheancestorsisacknowledgedonNewYear'sEvewithadinnerarrangedforthematthefamilybanquettable.Thespiritsoftheancestors,togetherwiththeliving,celebratetheonsetoftheNewYearasonegreatcommunity.Thecommunalfeastcalled"surroundingthestove"orweilu.Itsymbolizesfamilyunityandhonorsthepastandpresentgenerations.

¡¡¡¡TheOriginofChineseNewYear

¡¡¡¡TheChineseNewYearisnowpopularlyknownastheSpringFestivalbecauseitstartsfromtheBeginingofSpring(thefirstofthetwenty-fourtermsincoodinationwiththechangesofNature).Itsoriginistoooldtobetraced.Severalexplanationsarehangingaround.Allagree,however,thatthewordNian,whichinmodernChinesesolelymeans"year",wasoriginallythenameofamonsterbeastthatstartedtopreyonpeoplethenightbeforethebeginningofanewyear.

¡¡¡¡OnelegendgoesthatthebeastNianhadaverybigmouththatwouldswallowagreatmanypeoplewithonebite.Peoplewereveryscared.Oneday,anoldmancametotheirrescue,offeringtosubdueNian.ToNianhesaid,"Ihearsaythatyouareverycapable,butcanyouswallowtheotherbeastsofpreyonearthinsteadofpeoplewhoarebynomeansofyourworthyopponents?"So,itdidswallowmanyofthebeastsofpreyonearththatalsoharrassedpeopleandtheirdomesticanimalsfromtimetotime.

¡¡¡¡Afterthat,theoldmandisappearedridingthebeastNian.Heturnedouttobeanimmortalgod.NowthatNianisgoneandotherbeastsofpreyarealsoscaredintoforests,peoplebegintoenjoytheirpeacefullife.Beforetheoldmanleft,hehadtoldpeopletoputupredpaperdecorationsontheirwindowsanddoorsateachyear'sendtoscareawayNianincaseitsneakedbackagain,becauseredisthecolorthebeastfearedthemost.

¡¡¡¡Fromthenon,thetraditionofobservingtheconquestofNianiscarriedonfromgenerationtogeneration.Theterm"GuoNian",whichmaymean"SurvivetheNian"becomestoday"Celebratethe(New)Year"astheword"guo"inChinesehavingboththemeaningof"pass-over"and"observe".Thecustomofputtingupredpaperandfiringfire-crackerstoscareawayNianshouldithaveachancetorunlooseisstillaround.However,peopletodayhavelongforgottenwhytheyaredoingallthis,exceptthattheyfeelthecolorandthesoundaddtotheexcitementofthecelebration.

¡¡¡¡TraditionalNewYearFoods

¡¡¡¡ProbablymorefoodisconsumedduringtheNewYearcelebrationsthananyothertimeoftheyear.Vastamountsoftraditionalfoodispreparedforfamilyandfriends,aswellasthoseclosetouswhohavedied.

¡¡¡¡OnNewYear'sDay,theChinesefamilywilleatavegetariandishcalledjai.Althoughthevariousingredientsinjaiarerootvegetablesorfibrousvegetables,manypeopleattributevarioussuperstitiousaspectstothem.

¡¡¡¡Otherfoodsincludeawholefish,torepresenttogethernessandabundance,andachickenforprosperity.Thechickenmustbepresentedwithahead,tailandfeettosymbolizecompleteness.Noodlesshouldbeuncut,astheyrepresentlonglife.

¡¡¡¡InsouthChina,thefavoriteandmosttypicaldisheswereniangao,sweetsteamedglutinousrice(Å´Ã×)puddingandzongzi(glutinousricewrappedupinreed(«Î)leaves),anotherpopulardelicacy.

¡¡¡¡Inthenorth,steamed-wheatbread(mantou)andsmallmeatdumplingswerethepreferredfood.Thetremendousamountoffoodpreparedatthistimewasmeanttosymbolizeabundanceandwealthforthehousehold.

¡¡¡¡The15-DayCelebrationofChineseNewYear

¡¡¡¡ThefirstdayoftheLunarNewYearis"thewelcomingofthegodsoftheheavensandearth."Manypeopleabstainfrommeatonthefirstdayofthenewyearbecauseitisbelievedthatthiswillensurelongandhappylivesforthem.

¡¡¡¡Onthesecondday,theChinesepraytotheirancestorsaswellastoallthegods.Theyareextrakindtodogsandfeedthemwellasitisbelievedthattheseconddayisthebirthdayofalldogs.

¡¡¡¡Thethirdandfourthdaysareforthesons-in-lawstopayrespecttotheirparents-in-law.

¡¡¡¡ThefifthdayiscalledPoWoo.OnthatdaypeoplestayhometowelcometheGodofWealth.Noonevisitsfamiliesandfriendsonthefifthdaybecauseitwillbringbothpartiesbadluck.

¡¡¡¡Onthesixthtothe10thday,theChinesevisittheirrelativesandfriendsfreely.Theyalsovisitthetemplestoprayforgoodfortuneandhealth.

¡¡¡¡TheseventhdayoftheNewYearisthedayforfarmerstodisplaytheirproduce.Thesefarmersmakeadrinkfromseventypesofvegetablestocelebratetheoccasion.Theseventhdayisalsoconsideredthebirthdayofhumanbeings.Noodlesareeatentopromotelongevityandrawfishforsuccess.
