started,Iaimedtobecomeadoghandler.ImadesurethatwhenIcouldeventuallyapply,thatIwouldfitthe
criteria,ensuringthatIcompletedresponsetrainingandhadexperienceinNeighbourhoodPolicingaswell.
Whenthetimewasright,IapproachedtheInspectortoaskaboutapplying,whoverynicelytoldmeth
atIcouldn’tapplytobeadoghandlerbecauseIwasawoman.Ididn’trealizethiswouldbeahindrance,
sonaturallyIinquiredwhy.Iwasmetwithanowveryoutdatedattitudeofwomennotbeingsuitablefordo
ghandling.
Thereweren’tanyfemaledoghandlersinAvonandSomersetatthetime.Thatfactdidn’tstopme
fromapplyingfortherole,andneitherdidthedemandingapplicationprocess.Withagreatsupportsystem,I
joinedaclubandtookuprunningalongsidespecificpreparationsfortherole.Ipassedtheassessmentand
landedmydreamjob—atoughprocessandoneofthehardestphysicalchallengesofmylife.
IwontheNationalDogActionoftheYearawardin1999.Thiswasagreatachievement.It’sawhole
newworldindoghandlingnow.It’smoreopenandhonesttothosewhowanttojoin,andI’msograteful
andpleasedthatIcanbeatthispointinmycareer.
