insightsintounderstandingtheconceptofdiversitymanagementandhowmanagers
appliedthisintheirworkingenvironments.Over12months,40semi-structurcd
interviewswereconductedwithindividualsholdingmanagerialresponsibilitiesintheUK
businessoperationsandwithasmallnumberofseniorHRspecialistsfromtherelevant
headofficewhowerethearchitectsoftheequalityanddiversitypoliciesandprocedures.
Themajorityofthesampleswerestoremanagersbutanumberhadwiderregionalor
generalmanagerialrolesandnotonlyhadaresponsibilityfordiversityissuesbutalso
experiencedtheseasemployees.Althoughanimportantconsiderationwasthediversity
ofrespondents,andeveryeffortwasmadetoensurethattheyreflectedawiderangeof
visiblecharacteristics,themainpriorityofthestudywastoobtaintheviewsofthosestaff
withanorganizationalresponsibilityfortheinterpretationandapplicationofequalityand
diversitypolicies.Thismeantthatthediversityofthesamplewasconstrainedbythe
compositionofthepopulationinsuchroles.Theresultwasasamplethatwas70percent
femaleand30percentmale,withanagecompositionrangingfrommid-twentiestolate
fifties,althoughthemajoritywereintheirthirtiesorearlierforties.Therewasonlyone
non-whitemanagerintheUKsample,andonewithavisiblephysicaldisability.Itwas
difficulttoselectrespondentsonthegroundsoftheirnon-visiblcdiversity,suchas
religionandsexuality,asthesedifferenceswerenotmadeknownunlessduringthe
interviewtherespondentprovidedtheinformationthattheywere,forexample.Christian.
ThelargenumbersemployedintheUKhighstreetandUSbusinesses,combinedwiththe
fluidnatureofjobrolesintheonlinebusiness,meantthatsnowballsamplingwas
employedtoselectinterviewees.Thistechniquereliesonrespondentstoidentifyother
suitablepeopletointerview.Itisrecognizedthatsuchanapproachcouldhaveresultedin
somebiasintheselectionofrespondents.Totrytominimizethis,thelistofinterviewees
andtheirroleswereverifiedwiththeHRfunctionbothbeforeandaftertheinterviews

addition,eachrespondentwasaskedabouttheirjobroleandsupervisoryresponsibilities,

wherepeoplecouldbetreatedeitherthesame(anequalopportunitiesapproach)or

organizationalbenefitsschemewhererespondentswereaskedtoconsidertheadvantages
anddisadvantagesofprovidingbenefitsforspecificgroupsofemployees,suchas
workingparents,orforallemployees,suchasreducedratesformembershipofalocal
