people.FormanywhomadeiltoDawson,however,therewardswereworththedifficulttrip.

Ofthefirst20,000peoplewhodugforgold,4,0(H)gotrich.About100ofthesestayedrich

menfortherestoftheirlives.

Butnomatterhowrichtheywere,Dawsonwasnevercomfortable.Necessitieslikefood

andwoodwereveryexpensive.Butsoon,thegoldthatDawsondependedonhadallbeen

found.Thecitywascrowdedwithdisappointedpeoplewithnointerestinsettlingdown,and

whentheyheardtherewerenewgolddiscoveriesinAlaska,theyleftDawsonCityasquickly

WangservesasheadoftheArchitectureDepartmentattheChinaAcademyofArt

(CAA).HisofficeislocatedattheXiangshancampus(校内)oftheuniversityinHangzhou,

ZhejiangProvince.Manybuildingsonthecampusarehisoriginalcreations.

ThestyleofthecampusisquitedifferentfromthatofmostChineseuniversities.Many

visitorswereamazedbythecomplexarchitecturalspaceandabundantbuildingtypes.The

curves(曲线)ofthebuildingsperfectlymatchtheriseandfallofhills,formingauniqueview.

Wangcollectedmorethan7millionabandonedbricksofdifferentages.Heaskedthe

workerstousetraditionaltechniquestomakethebricksintowalls,roofsandcorridors.This

creationattractedalotofattentionthankstoitsmixtureofmodernandtraditionalChinese

elements(元素).

Wang'sworksshowadeepunderstandingofmodernarchitectureandagood

knowledgeoftraditions.Throughsuchabalance,hehadcreatedanewtypeofChinese

architecture,saidTadaoAndo,thewinnerofthe1995PritzkerPrize.

Wangbelievestraditionsshouldnotbesealedinglassboxesatmuseums.nThatisonly

evidencethattraditionsonceexisted,Hhesaid.

“ManyChinesepeoplehaveamisunderstandingoftraditions.Theythinktradition
