cartoonsaboutartificialintelligence(AI).Thesepostsusedthreehumorstyles:playfulcomparisons(likegiving

robotshumancharacteristics),meanjokesabouttechnology,oramixofboth.Somepostshadnohumorasa

comparison.

Over2,200participantsviewedthesepostsinanonlineexperiment.Theyratedhowfunnythecontentwas,

howmuchtheylikedthescientist,andhowcredibletheinformationseemed.Resultsrevealedthatlight,positive

humor—suchasshowingAIasacuriousrobotaskingquestions—madethescientistfeelmoreapproachable

andtheresearchmorereliable.However,meanorunfriendlyjokesreducedtrustinthescientist.

“Humorhelpspeopleconnectwithscientists,”Frankexplained.“Whenwelaugh,we’remoreopento

listening.”Butshestressedthatjokesmustfeelnatural,adding,“Iftheaudiencedoesn’tfinditfunny,itcould
