panichassetinabouttheimpactGenAIwillhaveoncheatinginschool.1TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingWhatshouldwemakeoftheseconcernsaboutGenAIcheating?Incompetitivecontextssuchassportsorgames,cheatingissaidtobemorallywrongbecauseoftheharmdonetoothersinvirtueofgaininganunfairadvantageoverone’scompetitors.Inthecontextofeducation,cheatingcanresultinsimilarunfairadvantages,butthemoralharmthattendstotakecenterstageistheharmdonetooneself.Studentswhocheatareharmingthemselvesbyfailingtorespectacademicintegrityandthecultivationoftheirlearning.2TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingTobesure,thereareethicalconcernssurroundingGenAIinsofarasitoffersanewwayforstudentstocheat.Butwhyhasthepublicreactionbeensofrenzied?Afterall,GenAIisnotthefirst,norwillitbethelastmethodstudentscanusetocheat,butthereactiontoGenAIseemstobecharacterizedbyanunusuallyhighleveloffear,panic,anddesperationasifitwerethreateningtheveryexistenceofhighereducation.Educatorshaveflooded

onlineforumstosharetheirtipsandtricksformakingassignmentsGenAI-proof,detectingAI-generatedtext,andbanningaccesstoGenAIontheschoolnetwork.3TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingSurprisingly,thepanicoverGenAIdoesn’tactuallyseemtobeaboutGenAI.Instead,thepanicseemstobefueledbytheexpectationthatstudentswon’tbeabletoresistthetemptationtouseitandthatcheatingwillbecomerampant.ThereleaseofGenAIisforcingeducatorstoconfrontamuchdeeperissuethathasbeentakingshapeforquitesometime:Morestudentsarebecomingincreasinglyobsessedwithgrades,GPAs,andcompletingadegree,andtheyarewillingtogotogreat,andsometimesunethical,lengthstoachievethesethings.4TextreadingUNIT6ReadingReadingThetransformationthatistakingplaceisbestexplainedbythegamificationofeducation.Gamificationreferstotheprocessofaddinggame-likeelements,suchaspoints,scores,rankings,andbadges,tomakenon-gameactivitiesmorepleasurable.Ashasbeenargued,partofwhatmakesgamificationsoappealingisthatittradescomplexityforsimplicity.Ourvaluesandgoalsbecomemuchcleareroncewehavequantified
