havecontributedsignificantlytothatgreenhouseeffect.Atmosphericconcentrationsof

GHGshaverisenfromaround280ppmtwocenturiesagotoaround370ppmtoday,

thankschieflytomankind'suseoffossilfuelsand,toalesserdegree,todeforestationand

otherland-usechanges.Bothsurfacetemperaturesandsealevelshavebeenrisingfor

sometime.Therearcgoodreasonstothinktemperatureswillcontinuerising.TheIPCC

hasestimatedalikelyrangeforthatincreaseof1.4℃-5.8℃overthenextcentury,

althoughthelowerendofthatrangeismorelikely.Sincewhatmattersisnotjustthe

absolutetemperaturelevelbuttherateofchangeaswell,itmakessensetotrytoslow

downtheincrease.Theworryisthatarapidriseintemperatureswouldleadtoclimate
