398,716participants.ThedatacoveredBMI,cardiorespiratoryfitness,andmortality
risk.Theteamfoundthattheriskofanearlydeathforindividualswithobesitywho
werefitwassimilartothatofpeopleclassedasfitandofnormalweight.What'smore,
havingobesityandbeingfitmeantalongerlifeonaveragethanhavinganormalweight
andbeingunfit.Whilethedatadidn’tshowfitnessasbeingtheonlyfactorinvolved,it
highlightedjusthowimportantitisinouroverallhealth.
"Fitnessisfarmoreimportantthanfatnessformortalityrisk,"saysexercise
physiologistSiddharthaAngadi,fromtheUniversityofVirginia.“Exerciseismorethan
justawaytoexpendcalories.Itcanlargelyreducetheriskofcardiovasculardiseaseand
all-causedeath."Theresearchersaren'tdismissingthehealthburdenofobesity:around
1in8areobesegloballyandthenumbersarerising.Itraisestheriskofhighblood
pressure,cancers,andotherdiseases.
However,therelationshipbetweenobesityandtheriskofanearlydeathisn'tclear-

Standingstonecirclesseemtohavesprunguparound5,800to5,500B.C.This
coincidedwithawarmerclimateintheregionthatbroughtmoreregularrainfallanda
landscapeofrichgrassesandtrees,goodconditionsforraisingcattleandgoats.But
thesewerealsogoodconditionsforbuildingpermanentstructures.Moreabundant
vegetationmeantlesspressuretokeepmovingtheanimalstofreshgrasslands,which
madebuildinghomesmoreworthwhile.This,andtheplateau'sabundanceofstones,
mayhaveencouragedthenomadstostayawhileandbuild.
Excavationsofthesesettlementsarerevealingsomethingofthispeople’swayof
life.Theykeptcattleandgoatsformeat,butcontinuedtohuntandgathertoexpand
theirdietwithhare,fruitsandnuts.Themanygrinding(磨碎)stonesfoundonthesites
suggestinhabitantswereregularlygrindinggrains,butthesewerelikelytobegathered
ratherthanfarmed.Theplateausiteshavealsorevealedtoolsmadewithmaterialsfrom
