thesestoriesforthesevenelementsofthehero'sjourney:aleadrole,ashiftofcirculmstances,alongsearch,a
challenge,anassociation,apersonaltransformationandaresultinglegacy(遗产).
Inourfirststuldy,wefoundthatpeplewhohadmorehero'sjourneyelementsintheirlifestoriesreported
moremeaninginlife,morehappinessandlessdepression.wealsofulndthathero'sjourneynarrativesprovided
morebenefits,oftenincludinga"redemptive"narrative,whereaperson'slifestorygoesfromdefeattovictory.
wethenwonderedwhetheradjulstingone'slifestorytobemore"heroic"wouldincreasefeelingsof
meaninginlife.wedevelopeda"restorying"interventioninwhichweurgedpeopletoretelltheirstoriesasa
hero'sjoulrney.participantsfirstidentifiedeachofthesevenelementsintheirlife,andthenweenculraged
themtoputthesepiecestogetherandformalogicalnarrative.
Inanotherstuldywithmorethan1,700participants,weconfirmedthatthisrestoryinginterventionworked:
ithelpedpepleseetheirlifeasahero'sjourney,whichinturnmadethatlifefeelmoremeaningful.
Interventionrecipients(接受者)alsoreportedgreaterlifesatisfactionandbecamemoreadaptableinthefaceof
personalchallenges.Besides,theseinterventionrecipientssawdifficultiesmorepositivelyanddealtwiththem
morecreativelyintheirlaterlife.
