Itisthefunctionofeducation,thefunctionofallofthegreatinstitutionsoflearningintheUnitedStates,toprovidecontinuityforournationallifetotransmittoyouththebestofourculturethathasbeentestedinthefireofhistory.Itisequallytheobligationofeducationtotrainthemindsandtalentsofouryouth:toimprove,throughcreativecitizenship,ourAmericaninstitutionsinaccordwiththerequirementsofthefuture.

Wecannotalwaysbuildthefutureforouryouth,butwecanbuildouryouthforthefuture.

Itisingreatuniversitieslikethisthattheideaswhichcanassureournationalsafetyandmaketomorrowshistory,arebeingforgedandshaped.Civilizationowesmosttothemenandwomen,knownandunknown,whosefree,inquiringmindsandrestlessintellectscouldnotbesubduedbythepoweroftyranny.

Thisisnotimeforanymantowithdrawintosomeivorytowerandproclaimtherighttoholdhimselfalooffromtheproblemsandtheagoniesofhissociety.Thetimescallforboldbeliefthattheworldcanbechangedbymansendeavor,andthatthisendeavorcanleadtosomethingnewandbetter.Nomancanseverthebondsthatunitehimtohissocietysimplybyavertinghiseyes.Hemusteverbereceptiveandsensitivetothenew;andhavesufficientcourageandskilltofacenovelfactsandtodealwiththem.

Wemayfindinthatsenseofprupose,thepersonalpeace,notofrepose,butofeffort,thekeensatisfactionofdoing,thedeepfeelingofachievementforsomethingfarbeyondourselves,theknowledgethatwebuildmoregloriouslythanweknow.
