1998memorandumofunderstandingbetweenAHA(theAmericanHospitalAssociation)

andEPA,whichlaidoutthreegoalsfortheHealthcareindustry:toeliminatemercury-

containingwaste,toreducetheoverallvolumeofwaste,andtoidentifyhazardous

substancesforpollution-preventionopportunities.Thisagreementlaunchedthenonprofit

HospitalsforaHealthyEnvironment(H2E),ajointprojectofAHAandEPA,alongwith

HCWHandtheAmericanNursesAssociation.Withinthelastfiveyears,interestin

greeningHealthcarehasmovedbeyondoperationstoencompassthedesignand

constructionofHealthcarefacilitiesthemselves.Toguideanewsustainabledesign

categoryinitsannualawardsprogram,theAmericanSocietyforHealthcareEngineering

(ASHE)publishedtheGreenHealthcareConstructionGuidanceStatementinJanuary

2002.Itisconsideredthefirstdocumenttoincorporatehealthconsiderationsintodesign

guidance.Notingthatpreventingdiseaseispreferabletotreatingdisease,itadvisesthat

"aprecautionaryandpreventiveapproachisanappropriatebasisfordecisionsregarding

materialselection,designfeatures,mechanicalsystems,infrastructure,andoperations

andmaintenancepractices".PromptedbyanimpendingHealthcareconstructionboomin

PatrickH.DollardDiscoveryHealthCentreearnedCertificationin2004.Meanwhile,the

nextversionoftheAIAGuidelinesfortheDesignandConstructionofHealthcare

Facilitiesisalsounderdevelopmentanddueoutin2006.PartsoralloftheAIA

guidelineshavereplacedindividualstatecodesin42U.S.states,accordingtoGuenther,

whoisparticipatingintherevision.Whilethecurrentversionincludesonlyone
