resurfacewhenIneedthemmost,givingmestrengthandallowingmetobreakfreefrom
theweightofreality,evenjustforamoment.Tome,Hironoisafriendwhoteachesmeto

Historically,whenliteraturewasconsidereddangerousor“bad”,moralistscouldnot
stoppeoplefrombuyingbooks.Now,whenbooksareseenasvirtuousandeducational,
thosesamemoralistscannotpersuadeanyonetopickoneup.Bymakingreadinga
“must-do”taskforself-improvement,wehavetakenawayitsprimaryattraction:thethrill
ofdoingsomethingforitsownsake,ratherthanforitsusefulness.
Infact,becomingareadermeanscultivatingarelationshipwiththeworldthatseems
counterproductive.Readingis“unprofitable”;itdoesnotteachtransferableskillsor
providenetworkingopportunities.Itis,inasense,ananti-socialactivity.Youturnyour
backontherealworldtoenteranimaginaryone.Yet,itispreciselythis“uselessness”that
makesreadingpowerful.Itoffersaninnerfreedomthatcannotbemeasuredbysocialvalue.
Ifwewanttosavereading,weshouldstoppraisingitsbenefitsandstartcelebratingits
delightfulworthlessness.
