Incontrast,defensesofthehumanitiesarenotandcannotbeconductedinaninquisitivespirit,becauseadefensivespiritisinimicaltoaninquisitiveone.Defensivenessis,itmustbeadmitted,anunderstandableresponsewhenthechoppingblock(砧板)isbroughtoutandyouneedtoexplainwhyyoushouldn'tbeonit.Itmaybethathumanistsneedtospendtimejoiningpoliticalbattles,whichrequirestheirparticipantstopretendtoknowthingsthattheydonotactuallyknow.

Nonetheless,anatmosphereofurgencyandcallsforimmediateactionareunfavorabletofieldsofstudylikeliteratureandphilosophythatrequireareflectivemood,andpretendingtoknowwhatonedoesn'tactuallyknowisunfavorabletoformsofinquirythatdemandanopenmind.

Adefensivemindsetalsoencouragespoliticization.Ifthestudyofliteratureorphilosophyhelpstofightracismortopromotedemocracyandeveryoneagreesthatracismisbad,anddemocracyisgood—thenyouhaveyouranswerastowhyweshouldn'tcutfundingforthestudyofliteratureorphilosophy.Politicizationisawayofarmingthehumanitiesforitspoliticalbattles,butitcomesatanintellectualcost.Whyisracismsobad?Whyisdemocracysogood?Politicizationsilencestheseandotherquestions,whereasthefunctionofthehumanitiesistoraisethem.

Humanistsarenotaloneintheirignoranceaboutthepurposeoftheirdisciplines.Butscientistsareunderalotlesspressuretoexplainwhytheyexistbecausethesocietyatlargebelievesitselftoalreadyhavetheanswertothatquestion.Imaynotknowwhyit'simportanttoreadHomerandPlato,butIdohaveadeeploveforreading,teachingandponderingthetexts.TheloveiswhatIwanttosharewithothers,aswellasthesurpriseanddelightoffindingresonance(共鸣).
