ThepsychologistBlumaZeigarniknoticedtheeffectofinterruptiononmemoryprocessingin1927.Intheexperiment,sheaskedeachparticipanttocompleteaseriesofseparatetasks,suchassolvingapuzzleorputtingtogetherasimplebox.Duringaroundhalfofthetasks,participantswerequietlystoppedbythepersoninchargeoftheexperiment,whileduringtheremainingtasks,theywereallowedtimetocompletethemuninterrupted.Followingtheexperiment,Zeigarnikinterviewedeachparticipant,askingthemtorecalldetailsofeachtaskthattheyhadtried.

Zeigarnik'searlyfindingsshowedthatparticipantswereabletorecalldetailsofinterruptedtasksaround90%betterthanthosewhohadbeenabletocompleteundisturbed.Theseresultssuggestthatadesiretocompleteataskcancauseittostayinaperson'smemoryuntilithasbeencompleted,andthatthefinalityofitscompletionenablestheprocessofforgettingittotakeplace.

OnewayofemployingtheZeigarnikeffectwhentryingtomemorizeadetailedpieceofinformation,suchasalongphonenumber,orwhenlearningasubject,mightbetoavoidtryingtorememberitinitsentiretyinonesitting.Takealookattheinformation,familiarizeyourselfwithit,then"interruptyourself"—lookawayfromwhereitiswrittenforafewmomentsandthinkofsomethingelse,beforereturningafewmoretimestorememberthenumber.Finally,piecethesesmallpartstogetherandtrytorecallthenumberinitsentirety.42.Whatdoestheunderlinedphrase"this
