“Whatoursystematicstudyfoundisthatwhilemostwastewatertreatmentplantsgreatlyreduce
microplasticloads,completeremovalremainsimpossiblewithcurrenttechnologies,”sayssenior
authorUn-JungKim,anenvironmentalengineerattheUniversityofTexasatArlington(UTA).
“Asaresult,manymicroplasticsarereleasedbackintotheenvironmentandthesemicroplastics
andotherpollutantswouldexistinverysmallquantities,butwecanbeinfluencedthroughsimple
actionslikedrinkingwater,doinglaundry,orwateringplants,leadingtopotentiallong-term
serioushumanhealthimpacts.”
Withoutstrongerregulationofmicroplastics,consumersarelargelylefttofacetheeffectsof
microplasticsonecologyandhumanhealthbythemselves.Armedwiththerightinformation,
however,itispossibletogreatlycutbackoneffects.
Oneimportantpointtoremember,forexample,isthatmicrofibersrepresentalargepartof
microplasticpollution,manyofwhichcomefromclothingmadeofsynthetic(合成的)materials.
