Introduction

Inthefirstquarterof2026,63%ofAmericanssaidtheyhave“often”or“always”feltgratitudeinthe

last30days1whenthinkingabouttheirfinances,

while36%havefeltstress.Financiallifeinthe

UnitedStatescanbringstability,possibilityanda

senseofprogress.Itcanalsobringuncertaintyandstrain.Inmanycases,Americansfeelbothprogressandpressureatthesametime.

Thistensionreflectsabroaderfinancialreality.While46%ofAmericansratetheircurrentfinancialsituationas“excellent”or“good,”alargershare(55%)saytheirfinancesaregettingworse,continuingamultiyear

patterninwhichmoreAmericansfeeltheirfinancialpositionisdecliningratherthanimproving.2

theycreatedameasureoffinancialfulfillmentbased

on37validateditems,usingahighlyreliablescale.This

FinancialFulfillmentScaleisrelatedtoexisting,validatedconcepts,includingtheU.S.ConsumerFinancial

ProtectionBureau(CFPB)FinancialWell-BeingScale,butismorecloselyassociatedwithoverallwell-being,likely

becauseitcapturestheemotionalaspectsoffinanciallife,aswellashowcloselyfinancialdecisionsalignwithvalues.Thus,fulfillmentismorethanwealth.Itconnectsobjectivefinancialconditionstomeaning,purposeandfeelingsaboutmoney.

Thestudyrevealsthat16%ofAmericanshaveachievedhighfinancialfulfillment,whiletwiceasmany,32%,areinastateoffinancialstress.Thelargestgroup(51%)fallsinbetween.Formanyadults,financiallifeincludessignsofprogressalongsideongoingtradeoffstobuildfinancialsecurityandfeelingsofcontrol.

WhereAmericansfallonthespectrumoffulfillmentmatters.Adultswithhigherfinancialfulfillmentarefarmore

likelytobethrivinginlife,toratetheirphysicalandmentalhealthpositively,andtofeelstrongerconnectionintheirrelationshipsandcommunities.Thosedifferencesremainmeaningfulevenwhenaccountingfornetworth,age,

incomeandotherdemographicfactors,whicharelesspredictiveofwell-beingthanfulfillment.Indeed,fulfillmentmorecloselypredictslifeoutcomesandwell-beingcomparedwithwealthalone.

Yet,fortheoneinthreeAmericanswhoarefinanciallystressed,thepathtowardamorefulfilledfinanciallifeoftenbeginswithmoreimmediategoals:reducingdebt,increasingincomeandcreatingstability.

Theseareoftenthefirststepsalongabroader

continuum,wherefinancialfulfillmentisnota

fixeddestinationbutsomethingthatshiftsover

timeascircumstancesandprioritieschange.Thisstudyexploresthatjourney,fromthefinancial

realitiesmostAmericansarenavigatingtodayto

theconditionsthatmakealifeofgreaterfreedom,confidenceandmeaningpossible.

moreaboutwhatmoneymakespossible.

theydowiththeirmoneythatbringsthemjoy,Americansoverwhelminglypointtoexperiences,relationshipsandmomentsofmeaning—not

possessionsorfinancialmilestones.

Financialfulfillmentisastateinwhichfinancesfeelalignedwithwhatmattersmost.Itcapturesnotonlyfinancialsecuritybutalsowhethermoneycreatesfreedom,confidenceandforwardmomentumratherthanongoingstrain.Atitscore,itcaptureswhetherfinancessupportthelifeapersonwantsto

build,withmeaningfulimplicationsforhowpeopleexperiencetheirlivesoverall.

Tomeasurethisconcept,EdwardJonesandGallupexamined37itemscollectedonthesurveythatmeasuredvariousaspectsofAmericans)financiallives,emotionalexperiencesandconfidencerelatedtomoney.A

Absenceofnegativeemotionrelatedtofinances

centersontheextenttowhichfinancesarenot

associatedwithstress,shame,angerorhopelessness.

Theseemotionscanshapefinanciallifeinpowerful

ways,especiallywhenpeoplefeelstuckorunabletoabsorbsetbacks.Lowerlevelsoftheseexperiences

pointtoafinancialstatethatfeelslessfragileandlessemotionallytaxing.

Financialconfidencedescribeswhetherpeoplefeelknowledgeable,clearandincontroloftheirfinances.Itincludeshavingafinancialplan,confidenceinmanagingcurrentandfutureneeds,andasensethatfinancial

prioritiesalignwithpersonalvalues.

Together,thesefourelementsshowwhyfinancialfulfillmentcannotbereducedtoincome,savingsordebt

Tounderstandhowfinancialfulfillmentvariesacrossthepopulation,GallupandEdwardJones

groupedadultsintothreelevels:financiallyfulfilled,financiallyconflictedandfinanciallystressed.

Thismakesitpossibletoseenotonlyhowcommonfinancialfulfillmentis,butalsohowmeaningfullyfinanciallifediffersacrosslevels.

Adultswereclassifiedintothesegroupsbasedontheirresponsesacrossthe37indicators.5Financiallyfulfilledadultsreportalignment,confidenceandsupportive

financialexperiences,whilefinanciallystressedadultsreportstrain,tradeoffsandlackofcontrol.Financiallyconflictedadults,whofallbetweenthesetwostates,experienceamixofstabilityanduncertainty.

Nationally,16%ofAmericansarefinanciallyfulfilled,while32%arefinanciallystressed.Thelargestshare(51%)arefinanciallyconflicted,indicatingthat

mostAmericansexperienceablendofprogressandongoingfinancialstrain.

offinanciallyconflictedandjust1%offinanciallyfulfilledadults.Incontrast,95%offinanciallyfulfilledadultsreport

“agreatdeal”ofconfidenceinmanagingtheircurrentfinancialneeds,comparedwith40%ofconflictedand8%

ofstressedadults.Whiledifferencesaremostpronouncedbetweenthestressedandthefulfilled,themajorityof

Americanswhoarefinanciallyconflictedaremeaningfullydistinctfromboth.Thismiddlegroupisnotsimplyaneutralmiddlecondition;itrepresentsadistinctfinancialstatemarkedbypartialstabilitypairedwithsomevulnerability.

Theimportanceoffinancialfulfillmentextendsbeyondthemoredirectfinancialbenefitsitisassociatedwith.Feelingmoresecure,confidentandlessstrainedisassociatedwithmeaningfuldifferencesinhowAmericansexperiencetheirlives.

Amongfinanciallyfulfilledadults,83%arethriving,

meaningtheyrateboththeircurrentandfuture

liveshighly.Thatsharefallsto52%amongfinanciallyconflictedadultsand18%amongfinancially

stressedadults.

Thegapbetweenstressedandfulfilledislarge,butthe

shiftfromstressedtoconflictedisalsomeaningful.Adultsintheconflictedgrouparefarmorelikelytobethriving

thanthosewhoarefinanciallystressed,reinforcingthatevenmoderatemovementawayfromfinancialstrainisassociatedwithrealimprovementsinwell-being.

sourcesincludingfinancialsocialmediainfluencersandartificialintelligencehadnoimpactonfulfillment.
