restrictionworksinhumans.Thatomission,however,changedthismonth,withthe
publicationoftheinitialresultsofthefirstsystematicinvestigationintothematter.This
study,knownasCALERlE(ComprehensiveAssessmentofLong-termEffectsof
ReducingIntakeofEnergy),wassponsoredbyAmerica'sNationalInstitutesofHealth.Il
took48menandwomenagedbetween25and50andassignedthemrandomlytoeithera
controlgrouporacalorie-restrictionregime.Thoseinthesecondgroupwererequiredto
cuttheircalorieintakeforsixmonthsto75%ofthatneededtomaintaintheirweight.The
CALERIEstudyisalandmarkinthehistoryofthefield,becauseitssubjectswereeither
ofnormalweightoronlyslightlyoverweightPreviousprojectshaveusedindividuals
whowereclinicallyobese,thusconfusingtheunquestionablebenefitstohealthof
reducingobesitywiththepossibleadvantagesofcalorierestrictiontotheotherwise
healthy.Atamolecularlevel,CALERIEsuggeststheseadvantagesarereal.Forexample,
thoseonrestricteddietshadlowerinsulinresistanceandlowerlevelsoflowdensity
lipoproteincholesterol.Theyshoweddropsinbodytemperatureandblood-insulin

TheyalsosufferedlessoxidativedamagetotheirDNAEricRavussin,ofLouisianaState
UniversityinBatonRouge,whoisoneofthestudy'sauthors,saysthatsuchresults
providesupportforthetheorythatcalorierestrictionproducesametabolicadaptation
overandabovethatwhichwouldbeexpectedfromweightlossalone.Nevertheless,such
