AThomasYoung(1773–1829)wasanEnglishphysician,physicistandlinguistwhoseextraordinaryintellectualrangeearnedhimthereputationasoneofthelastgreatuniversalscholars.Bornintoawealthyfamily,Youngdisplayedremarkableacademictalentfromchildhood,masteringmultiplelanguagesandscientificdisciplinesbyhisteenageyears.Unlikemanyspecialistsofhisera,herefusedtolimithisstudiestoasinglefield,pursuingresearchacrossphysics,medicine,linguisticsandarchaeologythroughouthiscareer.

BYoung’smostfamousscientificcontributionwashisworkonlightandwavetheory.Atthestartofthe19thcentury,thedominantviewamongscientistswasthatlightconsistedofindividualparticles.Young’sfamousdouble-slitexperimentdemonstratedthatlightbehavedasawave,producinginterferencepatternsthatparticletheorycouldnotexplain.Thisgroundbreakingfindinglaidthefoundationformodernwaveopticsandtransformedthestudyofphysics.

BOneofthemostvisibleimpactsofclimatechangeistheincreaseinpowerfultropicalcyclones.Category5hurricanes,oncerareoccurrences,havebecomeincreasinglycommoninoceanicregions.Warmeroceansurfacetemperaturesprovidemoreenergyforstormformation,intensifyingwindspeedsandrainfallassociatedwithcyclones.Coastalcommunitiesfacegrowingrisksofflooding,structuraldamageandpopulationdisplacementasaresultofthesestrongerstorms.
