Researchersconductedcontrolledexperimentsinalab.TheysampledADEandthe
controlsoilandfilled36potswithabout6.6poundsofsoilinsideagreenhousewithan
averagetemperatureof94F,representingfutureglobal-warmingconditionsbeyond
currentaveragetemperaturesinAmazonia(between71and82°F).Onethirdofthepots
onlyreceivedthecontrolsoil,whileanotherthirdreceiveda4to1mixtureofthecontrol
soilandADE,andthefinalthirdreceived100%ADE.
Followingtheexperiment,thecontrolsoilscontainedfewernutrientsthantheyhadat
thestart,whichreflectsuptakebytheplants.However,the100%ADEsoilsremained
richerthancontrolsoils,whilenutrientlevelswereintermediateinthe20percentADE
soils.“OurdatashowedADEcontainsmicroorganismsthatarebetteratthis
transformationofsoils,thusprovidingmoreresourcesforplantdevelopment,”co-author
andbiologistAndersonSantosdeFreitassaid.
TheseresultswereenoughtoconvincetheteamthatADEcanboostplantgrowth,
butitdoescomewithsomecaution.“ADEhastakenthousandsofyearstobuildupand
wouldtakeanequaltimetoregenerateinnatureifused,”co-authorandbiologistSiuMui
Tsaisaid.“Ourrecommendationsaren'ttotakeadvantageofADEitself,butratherto
copyitscharacteristics,particularlyitsmicroorganisms,foruseinfutureecological
