B Dear Editor, Being an amateur astronomer for more than 25 years, I have always been disappointed in the quality of the Michigan sky. I have lived in south
18、east Michigan for my entire life andhave tried to view the evening sky with little success. When I found out that The Headlands had been selected as a dark sky park and there was an observatory(天文台)being constructed, I was beyond excited. When I found out that the park is free to the public, friendl
19、y to amateur astronomers, and hosts free programs, I knew J had to visit. We made our first visit during a vacation of ours and visited on July 1.When we arrived, I was amazed that more than 200 people were lined up waiting to hear Mary present her program. Mary and Gary were both very appreciative
20、and helpful with helping me set up my telescope. After her program, we had two telescopes set up and we allowed the guests to start to view. Each person spent a minute or two in the eyepiece and there were never fewer than 50 people in the line, I received nothing but positive remarks from every per
21、son. Their knowledge ranged from nothing to astrophysicists(天体物理学家)and everything in between. I was able to educate some people with my limited knowledge and some people were able to educate meas well. A few weeks after this, we heard about a potential upcoming Aurora Borealis (北极光) sighting. We dec
22、ided at 6:45 p.m. to make a last minute trip to the Headlands. Even though the weather worsened throughout the evening, we decided to stay for a few hours to see if it will clear. Even though the sky didnt clear that night, we stayed and enjoyed the peacefulness. This park is a treasure for both us
