Although he is admired by many, a number of industry insiders criticize his business tactics, which they consider anti-competitive, an opinion which has in some cases been upheld by the courts .In the later stages of his career, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, d

9、ading Task,Text A My Advice to Students: Get a Sound, Broad Education 1 Hundreds of students send me e-mail each year asking for advice about education. They want to know what to study, or whether its OK to drop out of college since thats what I did. 2 A smaller number of parents send messages, ofte

10、n poignant, seeking guidance for their son or daughter. How can we steer our child toward success? they ask. 3 My basic advice is simple and heartfelt: Get the best education you can. Take advantage of high school and college. Learn how to learn.,4 Its true that I dropped out of college to start Mic

11、rosoft, but I was at Harvard for three years before dropping out and Id love to have the time to go back. As Ive said before, nobody should drop out college unless they believe they face the opportunity of a lifetime. And even then they should reconsider. 5 Kathy Cridland, a six-grade teacher in Ohi

12、o, wrote to say, Several of my students claim that you never finished high school. Since you are a success, my students perceive that as a reason not to care much about getting a good education.,While-Reading Task,While-Reading Task,6I finished high school! 7The computer industry has lots of people

13、who didnt finish college, but Im not aware of any success stories that began with somebody dropping out of high school. 8In my companys early years we had a bright part-time programmer who threatened to drop out of high school to work full-time. We told him no. 9Quite a few of our people didnt finis

14、h college, but we discourage dropping out. Having a diploma certainly helps somebody who is looking to us for a job.,10College isnt the only place where information exists. You can learn in a library. But somebody handing you a book doesnt automatically foster learning. You want to learn with other

15、people, ask questions, try out ideas and test your ability. It usually takes more than just a book. Education should be broad, although its fine to have deep interests, too. 11In high school there were periods when I was highly focused on writing software, but for most of my high-school years I had

16、wide-ranging academic interests. My parents encouraged this, and Im grateful that they did.,While-Reading Task,While-Reading Task,12Although I attended a lot of different kinds of classes in college, I signed up for only one computer class the whole time. I read about all kinds of things. 13One pare

17、nt wrote to me that her 15-year-old son lost himself in the hole of the computer. He got an A in Website design, but his other grades were sinking, she said.,While-Reading Task,14 This boy is making a mistake. High school and college offer you the best chance to learn broadly math, history, various

18、sciences and to do projects with other kids that teach you first-hand about group dynamics. Its fine to take a deep interest in computers, dance, language or any other discipline, but not if it jeopardizes breadth. 15 I think kids sometimes trap themselves into a narrow identity. I wonder if theyve

19、just decided, OK, Im the person whos good at accounting. 16 A friend asks, Hey, what have you been reading?,While-Reading Task,17 Well, Im reading about accounting. 18 Its just their sort of self-definition, and its probably comfortable for them. But its unfortunate if it comes at the sacrifice of l

20、earning about the broader world, or learning to work cooperatively. Im as impressed as the next person is when an 11-year-old can do calculus and is learning to think logically. But a kid who is reading about Robison Crusoe is thinking logically, too. Its not completely different.,While-Reading Task

21、,19 In college, its appropriate to think about specialization. Getting real expertise in an area of interest can lead to success - unless the specialty ends up being a dead end or youre not good at it. Graduate school is one way to get specialized knowledge, although extended college education isnt

22、always a good investment from a purely economic standpoint.,While-Reading Task,20 Choosing a specialty isnt something high-school students should worry about. They should worry about getting a strong academic start. Theres not a perfect correlation between attitudes in high school and success in lat

23、er life, of course. 21 But its a real mistake not to take the opportunity to learn a huge range of subjects, to learn to work with people in high school, and to get the grades that will help you get into a good college., Each year hundreds of students send me email and ask me for advice about educat

24、ion. Note the use of “asking for advice about education” in the sentence. The subject of “asking for” is “hundreds of students”. cf. My wife had long talk with Sally, explaining why she didnt want the children to play together. Practice for this structure is offered in the student book.,Hundreds of

28、f your symptoms last more than a week. She was encouraged to seek counseling for her marriage problem. I think its time we sought legal advice. She managed to calm him down and seek help from a neighbour.,seek: v. to ask for something or try to get something,e.g. Your teacher can give you guidance o

29、n choosing a career and writing a job application. I thought that that could not be used, so I seek your guidance, Mr. Speaker.,guidance: n. help and advice that is given to someone about their work, education, or personal life, They ask how they can help their child to achieve success.,“How can we

30、steer our child toward success?” they ask.,e.g. I try to steer my children towards healthier foods. The main task of the new government will be to steer the country towards democracy. The police are constantly searching for new ways of steering young people away from a life of crime.,steer (towards/

31、away from something): to influence the way something happens or the way people behave,e.g. Please accept my heartfelt apologies. Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your concern and generosity. We sent our heartfelt sympathy to her and her family.,heartfelt: a. strongly felt and sincere , Make goo

32、d use of high school and college.,Take advantage of high school and college.,e.g. Students should take advantage of computer labs on campus. We take advantage of the Internet to get authentic English materials. She took advantage of the childrens absence to tidy their rooms. cf. He took advantage of

33、 my generosity.,take advantage of: make use of something well, properly, etc.; make use of an opportunity, I admit that I left college early to start Microsoft, but I had studied at Harvard for three years when I left. Note the structure “Its true that but” used to say when you admit that what someo

34、ne has said is true, but you want to add something new or different that is also important. For example: Of course its true that a lot of men like beer and football, but this doesnt mean that they all do. Its true that there have been some very serious train accidents recently, but its generally qui

35、te a safe way to travel.,Its true that I dropped out of college to start Microsoft, but I was at Harvard for three years before dropping out ., unless they believe they face the best opportunity they ever have, unless they believe they face the opportunity of a lifetime.,e.g. Winners of the competit

36、ion will receive the holiday of a lifetime. 38、rdays elections.,claim: v. to say that something is true or is a fact although you cannot prove it and other people might not believe it, my students think of that as a reason for not paying much attention to getting a good education., my students perceive that as a reason not to care much about get

A science degree and artistic interests are often perceived as incompatible.,perceive: v. to understand or think of something in a particular way,e.g. How did he ever conceive such an idea? I simply could not conceive

(formal) to imagine a particular situation or to think about something in a particular way, but I havent known/met a successful person who didnt finish high school.,but Im not aware of any success stories that began with somebody drop

44、ful,Having a diploma certainly helps somebody who is looking to us for a job., Having a diploma is certainly of help for somebody who is trying to find a job in our company.,A diploma is a document showing that you have completed a course of study or part of your education,e.g. Cities are looking to

As young children, we looked to our parents for guidance.,look to/toward someone for something: to hope or expect to get help, advice, etc. from someone, But somebody who gives you a book doesnt automatically encourage learning,But somebody handing you a book doesnt autom

46、atically foster learning.,e.g. This approach will foster an understanding of environmental issues. The clubs aim is to foster better relations within the community. They were discussing the best way to foster democracy and prosperity in the countries.,foster: v. to encourage the development or growt

Attention has been focused on the dangers of nuclear reactors.,focus on: to give attention, effort, etc. to one particular subject, situation or person rather than another, I had a wide arrange of academic interests., I had
