1、Emily Dickinson,艾米丽迪金森,I Life Introduction,She was born in 1830 into a Calvinist family of Amherst, Massachusetts. Her father was a Whig lawyer and treasurer of Amherst college and congressman. He was a man of considerable means and strong personality. Her mother was gentle and dependent, devoted to

2、 the care of her family.,Emily enjoyed a normal and vivacious girlhood though she was shy, sensitive and rebellious. For two years she studied at Amherst Academy and spent one more at the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. She settled down to a normal New England village life, reading and writing and ba

3、king bread for the family.,She read Bible, Shakespeare, and Keats. She remained home except for a visit of a few weeks to Washington, a visit to Philadelphia in 1853, and a brief stay in Boston. Thats why she got the title “the eccentric recluse of Amherst”. In her later years, she remained at home

4、and saw few people, but she wrote to her friends. Thomas Wentworth Higginson, an editor, who accepted her poems but suggested her to change the style, which appalled her.,Her works,She wrote 1775 poems but only 7 were published when she was alive. 6、is, had them published. In 1890, 115 poems were printed. 1914 saw more volumes of her poems and letters.
