1、Unit 5,Omission 减省译法,I. What is Omission as a skill?,A method to avoid translating some words in the original language without reducing or changing the original meaning. (Prerequisite condition: Faithfulness in meaning doesnt suffer) 前提:忠实于原文 The purpose of omission is to make the translation sound

2、smooth and natural in the target language. (A strategy to achieve Expressiveness and sometimes Elegance as well) 目的:通顺,自然,增强表达力,I. What is Omission as a skill?,The decisive factors: a. meaning and structure of the original language b. grammatical and lexical structure of the target language,II. Two

3、Types of Omission,1. Syntactic Omission 句法性减省 differences at both word and sentence level 2. Rhetoric Omission 修辞性减省 differences in the way of expressing, e.g.: the source language - more general while the target language - more specific.,Examples:,1. 7、反身代词、关系代词 1. In Japan it is rude to blow your nose and as in China, rude to leave your chopsticks standing up in a bowl of rice. 在日本,擤鼻子很不文雅。而在中国,将筷子竖直插在饭碗里是很不恰当的。 2. University postgraduate applicants who had worked at a job would

14、receive preference over those who had not. 报考大学硕士生的人,有工作经验的优先录取。 2. The crowd was pushing harder.
