1、Higher Vocational English,Unit 8: Culture shocks,Background References,The term, culture shock, refers to the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. We can describe culture shock as the physical and emotional
2、discomfort one suffers when coming to live in another country or a place different from the place of origin. The symptoms of cultural shock can appear at different times. Although, one can experience real pain from culture shock; it is also an opportunity for redefining ones life objectives. It is a
3、 great opportunity for learning and acquiring new perspectives.,What Is Culture Shock,Background References,Disorientation: One major cause is a general sense of disorientation. When you enter a new culture, most of the rules and patterns that you are accustomed to suddenly change, so it is hard to
4、understand what is going on around you and to know how you should behave. (2) Increased demands on your energy: Another cause is the greater physical, mental, emotional demands on your energy placed on you by life in a new culture. Physical drain: You tend to get sick more often in a new environment
5、.,What Causes Culture Shock,Background References,Mental drain: The main problem here is constantly having to communicate in a language you dont speak well, but there is also mental drain in just having to re-learn how to carry out so many aspects of your life. Emotional drain is probably the most i
6、mportant factor. Emotional drain comes from frequently feeling foolish and from frustrations you face in trying to get things done. (3) Decreased replenishment of energy: A third cause is the fact that you are removed from many of the things in life that would normally give you support and refreshme

The local environment may not allow you to engage in some of your previous hobbies or forms of recreation. Other contributing factors: Inaccurat
8、e expectations about a new culture often lead to frustration and disappointment. The hasty negative judgments in encounters with Chinese often result in a growing list of grievances. Individual incidents are then often over-generalized and become general accusations and indictments of China and its
9、culture.,What Causes Culture Shock,Background References,Culture shock has many stages. Each stage can be ongoing or appear only at certain times. The first stage is the incubation stage. In this first stage, the new arrival may feel pleased by all of the new things encountered. In the second stage,
10、 a person may encounter some difficult times in daily life. In this stage, there may be feelings of discontent, impatience, anger, sadness, and feeling incompetence. 11、e fourth stage, the person realizes that the new culture has good and bad things to offer. The fifth stage is the stage that is called the re-entry shock. This occurs when a return to the country of origin is made. These stages are present at different times and each person has their own way of reac
