6、Prufrock is about a lonely, sexually frustrated middle-aged man who, lacking self-confidence, wants to say something but is afraid to do so, and ultimately does not.,Analysis of Prufrock,1. 7、had the subtitle Prufrock among the Women. Eliot said The Love Song of portion of the title came from The Love Song of Har Dyal, a poem by Rudyard Kipling.,2. His Character,anti-hero:self-conscious,self-distrusting, timid ,lacking in vitality and courage/ coward impotent physically and spiritually,
8、tortured between desire and impotence desire for love, yet afraid of being rejected and misunderstood, desires for true life, love, turn a new leaf , yet has not courage to act/take action,3. Irony in the poem,The title ”love song” sings of no love, but inability to love because of solipsism. He has

10、,Paralysis Fragmentation Repetition and anxiety,Paralysis: Like Hamlet, Prufrock is paralyzed and unable to act, about whether he should dare to eat a peach (122) in front of high-society women.,Fragmentation: Prufrocks mind is perhaps a better representative of this fragmentation: all over the plac
11、e, interrupted by doubt, and looping back on itself, Prufrocks train of thought is deeply fragmented. His mind jumps in new directions and leaves other thoughts cursorily examined or sometimes incomplete.,Repetition and anxiety: Eliot uses several refrains to illustrate Prufrocks tendency to get stu
12、ck on a problem. The repetition indicates Prufrocks paralysis in the present tense and inability to escape his restrictive thoughts and fears. The swinging rhythm of the poem hints at a confusing, chaotic sense of time within Prufrocks head.,5.Poetic Form,Free verse: no rhyme, meter, stanza form. Dr
13、amatic monologue: the character speaks directly to us about his thoughts in leaps and bounds, jumping from one image to another, just as human mind does. As we listen to his monologue and make connections that are not spelled out, we come to understand the essence of the man, the private self that P
14、rufrock hides from acquaintances.,Writing style,1. Eliots poetry was becoming noted for its fresh visual imagery, its flexible tone, and highly expressive rhythm. 2. Eliots poetry is difficult to read. a. For one thing the images and symbols seem very much disconnected b. An obvious source of diffic
15、ult lies in his learned quotations and allusions.,3. Eliot piles up a heap of images, visual, auditory, olfactory, and more for the readers to figure out what is being said.
