1、4Unit FourInternational Conference Learning Objectives In this unit, youll learn to accomplish the following tasks.Task 1: Chairing a MeetingTask 2: Conference PresentationTask 3: Question and AnswerTask 1Chairing a Meeting Illustration Introduction Chairing different forms of meeting has different
2、tasks. The appropriate handling of a meeting depends on a chairmans adequate preparations, expertise in the topic of the meeting, past experiences, responsibilities and tactful chairing manners. This task only deals with how to chair a plenary session. Sample Demonstration Students will read samples
3、 of opening speeches to familiarize themselves with the format and content. A video sample is available for students to view the manner of chairing a meeting and introducing a speaker. Learning Aids introduces how to chair a plenary session. explains the responsibilities of a chairperson. provides t
4、ips on chairing manners. Useful Expressions and Sentence Patterns Students should be familiar with these expressions and patterns and learn to usethem. The teacher can be selective in explaining the sentences.Pedagogical Suggestions l Choose one sample for demonstration. Guide the students to read t
5、he sample and illustrate the format. Divide students into groups to read the remaining samples and compare and contrast these samples. l Use Check Your Understanding to check if students have comprehended the text after each sample. l Use Exercises to have student practice writing speeches based on
6、the proposed setting. Divide students into groups and assign different roles to practice oral speeches. Task 2Presentation to the ConferenceIllustration Introduction Conference presentations/talks are essential to academic communications. Making an oral presentation is different from making a writte
7、n one. Presenters of various meetings are encouraged to explore creative and innovative formats, especially those that invite audience participation and involvement. Sample Demonstration Three samples are provided for students to get familiar with the format of presentations. An audio sample is prov
8、ided for students to hear the speech delivered by an articulate speaker. Learning Aids Tips on speaking manners and body language are available to help students learn to make a successful presentation. Besides writing their own speech scripts, they need to deliver

The students will gain knowledge about asking questions properly and responding to questions strategicall

Students will learn the different roles these people play in a typical Q & A session. Sample Demonstration Students will read and watch samples of Q & A sessions to famililarize themselves
13、 with the Q & A process. Learning Aids This section provides useful tips for speakers and moderators. Useful Expressions and Sentence Patterns This section includes abundant resources of expression and sentence patterns for the questioner, speakers and moderator. Students will find them very useful
14、when simulating a Q and A session. Pedagogical Suggestions l Choose one sample and guide the students through reading to explain some language points and the format. Divide students into groups to look at the remaining samples. l Have students read Learning Aids and review the samples to find answers to Exercise 1
