Fitzgerald, through the narrator voice, admired the new riches of the time, but on the same time, was uncomfor
2、table with the materialism and lack of morality. Despite the openness of the era, social classes stood strong, and they are the background of the novel. Fitzgerald, who had lost his first love due to social standing differences, separated Gatsby and Daisy on the same grounds. The Great Gatsby is con
3、sidered a grand model of the great American novel and is a top ranking regular in most lists ranking 20th century literature,In the First World War, the hero Gatsby served in the military when he met a lady Daisy. They love at first sight. Gatsby was poor and can not afford to marry this beautiful y
4、oung lady, soon as the troops went to Europe, Daisy married to a millionaire, Tom Buchanan. After the war, Gatsby returned to the United States, in order to be able to rekindle old dreams with Daisy, he engage in illegal trade, and earned a lot of money. He tried to re-win the hearts and minds Daisy
5、, he bought a luxury villa not far away from Daisys home, and all day long banquet guests, hoping that one day Daisy will appear in his dinner. Nike, Daisys second cousin, help them met at Nicks home. Gatsby required Daisy and Tom to break, but Daisy covet Toms social status and luxury living. Tom,
6、Gatsby, Daisy, after three showdown, Daisy drove Gatsbys car to go home, due to feelings of tension, Daisys driving lost control and run into Toms mistress. In order to protect Daisy, Gatsby is willing to assume the responsibility of driving. While Tom incite his mistresss husband that Gatsby was th

Jay Gatsby (originally James Gatz) a young, mysterious millionaire with shady business connections later revealed to be a bootlegger(走私者), originally from Minnesota. He is obsessed with Daisy Fay Buchanan, whom he had met when
9、he was a stationed as a young officer in World War I. Buchanan has parallels with William Mitchell, the Chicagoan who married Ginevra King. Buchanan and Mitchell were both Chicagoans with an interest in polo. Like Ginevras father, whom Fit
12、zgerald resented, Buchanan attended Yale and is a white supremacist,Jordan Baker She is Daisy Buchanans long-time friend, a professional golfer with a slightly shady reputation. Fitzgerald told Maxwell Perkins that Jordan was based on the golfer Edith Cummings, a friend of Ginevra King. Her name is
13、a play on the two then-popular automobile brands, the Jordan Motor Car Company and the Baker Motor Vehicle, alluding to Jordans fast reputation and the freedom now presented to Americans, especially women, in the 1920s. George B. Wilson a mechanic and owner of a garage. When he learns of the death o
14、f his wife, he shoots and kills Gatsby, wrongly believing he had been driving the car that killed Myrtle, and then kills himself. Myrtle Wilson Georges wife, and Tom Buchanans mistress. She is accidentally killed after being hit by a car, driven by Daisy, though Gatsby takes the blame for it,Theme,T
15、he rise and decline of American dream. Many critics had raised this question: Does Gatsby represent the American dream? He was born in a family with low status, but finally he became a millionaire. To some degree, he represented the success of Americans. Tom and Daisy stand for the upper class, but
16、they move from one place to another with unease, they possess no morals, no obligation, no dream. Myrtle and her husband are the victims in this tragedy. Among these people who are rich ,wealthy, powerful and influential, they dont have many choices.
