Both my parents came from broken homes and had difficult childhoods; yet they never dwelt on (唠叨) how abnormal their families were. They were both survivors, but not survivors at someone elses expense. In my mother, I saw loves ability to forgive. I saw my sweet Mom love my grandfather, even if he had abandoned her and my grandma and failed to provide for their needs. I never saw Mother treat Grandpa any way but lovingly, even if he was far from lovable. I learned how love behaves and forgives because I saw what a woman can do and be if she wants to if she is unwilling to let her past determine her future. I watched my mother attend my hundred-year-old grandmother who, in her blindness and deafness, needed almost total care. When I was in her home, I heard what Ive heard all my life: “I love you, Mother.” They would tell each other this at least five times a day when Mom would get Grandma up or prepare her meals. And I would hear loves response as Grandma said, “And I love you, too, Leah.” Love forgives and moves on, focusing not on what might have been, what could have been or what we wish were different. Instead, loves focus is on what needs to be done now and on doing it the best we can. 41. The authors parents probably _. B 第 5 页 共 14 页 Lego, the inventor of those colorful bricks that have inspired kids imaginations worldwide, has celebrated its 53rd anniversary. In 1958, a man named Godtfred created the plastic building bricks that can now be found in almost every childs toy box. The simple building block has become one of the most well-known and popular toys around the world. “The Lego brick continues to be very attractive, because it allows children, and others, to develop their creativity and imagination,” said Charlotte Simonsen, a spokeswoman of Lego. The companys building brick allows an endless number of links. With just two bricks there are 24 different links, and with six, there are 915 million possibilities, according to Lego. A half-century after its creation, more than 400 million children and adults spend five billion hours a year putting the bricks together and pulling them apart. Also, the bricks made today can still link with those made in 1958. Lego bricks arent just childs play: they also attract the interest of adults. South Korean adventurer, Heo Young-Ho, who climbed Mount Everest in 1987, left a Lego toy behind in the snow during his climb. After its great success Lego experienced a serious crisis (危机) at the end of the 1990s, hit hard by competition from electronic games. Lego then suffered a dark period that lasted several years. With great efforts, the company began to prosper again, and in 2006 it earned about 1.5 billion dollars in 130 countries. Seven boxes of Lego are now sold every second around the world, and 19 billion bricks are produced each year: enough to encircle the Earth five times! 45. The Lego bricks have remained popular in the past 53 years because they _. A. attract many children worldwide B. brought imagination to the children worldwide C. have endless links that bring many imaginations D. make the children and even adults worldwide creative and imaginative 46. The example of Heo Young-Ho proves that _. A. Heo Youn-Ho also loved playing Lego bricks B. the Lego bricks made him a mountain climber C. the Lego bricks not only interest children but also adults D. the Lego bricks are helpful when one goes on an adventure 47. It can be inferred that _. A. there are 915 million different links with 6 bricks B. the Lego Bricks used to fail the competition from electronic games C. the Lego Bricks has made a lot of money from the people worldwide D. the bricks made today dont change much compared with those made a half century ago 48. What is the best title? A. Lego bricks: a brilliant and struggling history. B. Lego bricks: making creativity and imagination. C. Lego bricks: an attraction of both children and adults. D. Lego bricks: making billions of money every year. C Psychiatrists (精神病专家) who work with older parents say that maturity (成熟) can be wealth in child raising older parents are more thoughtful, use less physical discipline and spend more time with their children. But raising kids takes money and energy. Many older parents find themselves balancing their limited financial resources, less energy and failing health against the growing demands of an active child. Dying and leaving young children is probably the older parents biggest, and often unspoken, fear. Having late-life children, says an economics professor, often means parents, particularly fathers, “end up retiring much later.” For many, retirement becomes an unavailable dream. Henry Metcalf, a 54-year-old journalist, knows it takes money to raise kids. But hes also worried that his energy will give out first. Sure, he can still ride bikes with his athletic fifth grader, but hes learned that young at heart doesnt mean young. Lately hes been taking afternoon naps (午睡) to keep up his energy. “My body is aging,” says Metcalf. “You cant get away from that.” Often, older parents hear the ticking (滴答作响) of another kind of biological clock. Doctors who work with middle-aged and older parents say fears about aging are nothing to laugh at. “They worry theyll be mistaken for grandparents, or that theyll need help getting up out of those little chairs in nursery school,” says Joan Galst, a New York psychologist. But at the center of those little fears there is often a much bigger one: “that they wont be alive long enough to support and protect their child,” she says. Many late-life parents, though, say their children came at just the right time. After marrying late and experiencing years of fertility (受孕) treatment, Marilyn and her husband, Randy, had twins. “We both wanted children,” says Marilyn, who was 55 when she gave birth. The twins have given the couple what they desired for years, “a sense of family.” Kids of older dads are often smarter, happier and more sociable because their fathers are more involved in their lives. “The dads are older, more full-grown,” says Dr. Silber, “and more ready to focus on parenting.” 49. Psychiatrists regard maturity as wealth in child raising because older parents _. A. can better balance their resources against childrens demands B. are usually more experienced in bringing up their children C. are often better prepared financially D. can take better care of their children 第 7 页 共 14 页 50. A. they have to go on working beyond their retirement age B. they cant get full pension (养老金) unless they work some extra years C. they cant get the retirement benefits they have dreamed of D. they are unwilling to retire when they reach their retirement age 51. The example of Henry Metcalf shows that _. A. many people are young in spirit despite their advanced age B. taking afternoon naps is a good way to keep energy C. older parents tend to be concerned about their aging bodies D. older parents should exercise more to keep up with their athletic children 52. What do we learn about Marilyn and Randy? A. They thought they were an example of successful fertility treatment. B. Not until they had the twins did they feel they had formed a family. C.
