To help students learn 10 new words and the dif-ferent usages of 5 important phrases;,. Teaching Content 1. Discussion of the text and necessary explanations; 2. Usages of 5 important phrases and 10 new words; 3. Fast Reading Training; . Teaching Emphasis and Difficulty 1. Emphasis: helping students get familiar with the whole process of a writers producing a good story ; 2. Difficulty: helping students realize the functions of genius and craftsmanship in the production of a good story.,. Teaching Process A. Text Treatment 1. Lead-in: The teacher asks students about what kind of novel they like reading and how a good story is produced. 2. Discussion of the text: ( On the precondition that all the students have previewed the text carefully beforehand. ),Pictures of some writers,(1965- ) J. K. Rowling a British author best known as the creator of the Harry Potter fantasy series, the idea for which was conceived on a train trip from Manchester to London in 1990. The Potter books sold more than 400 million copies.,Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910),War and Peace Anna Karenina,Mark Twain (1835-1910),Adventures of Tom Sawyer The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn,William Shakespeare (1564-1616),Romeo and Juliet A Midsummer Nights Dream Merchant of Venice,Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941),The first non-European who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913 Gitanjali 吉檀迦利,Lin Yutang (1895-1976),My Country and My People 吾国与吾民 (1935) The Importance of Living 生活的艺术 (1937) Moment in Peking 京华烟云( 1939 ) His many works represent an attempt to bridge the cultural gap between the East and the West. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times in the 1970s.,(1) Questions for Discussion: According to the author, what is “genius” and what is “craftsmanship”? What is the interrelationship between the two? In what way is “genius” different from “craftsmanship”? What roles do they play in helping a writer produce a good story? What are the preconditions for a story to be conceived?,According to the authors description, how does a story grow in a writers mind? What are the functions of the craftsman in making a story come into being? Explain each briefly. In the latter part of the text, the author says: “There is magic in intention”. How do you understand his remark? What are the benefits of rewriting a story? How do you comprehend the meaning of the last paragraph as far as your English learning is concerned?,Method to be applied: Elicitation and guiding (The teacher should encourage volunteers and meanwhile call on those inactive ones to participate in the discussion); Grading students responses right on the spot. (2) Checking on answers to questions about Comprehending the text and Understanding vocabulary( Students have done the two exer-cises beforehand when they preview the text ).,3. Discussion of Key Words and Phrases (1) come upon(in the text) to meet by chance Other usages: The enemy came upon us only to be entrapped and wiped out. Many misfortunes came upon them during that harsh winter.,(2) seize upon/on-(in the text) to snatch at(抓住) Other usages: The pirates seized upon the ship and im-prisoned the crew. That fellow would seize upon any excuse to justify himself.,(3) look into-(in the text) to examine Other usages: The child looked into the box and jumped back with fright. When I entered the room, she was looking into some fashion magazines. The police chief said that they would look into the case and capture the murderer.,(4) fill out(in the text) to make fuller or more substantial(填补漏缺) Other usages: After Tom passed his driving test he filled out an application form for his drivers license. She has filled out a lot since I saw her last. The balloon filled out as the gas was pumped into it.,( 5 )show up(in the text) to reveal clearly (暴露无遗),Other usages: The dark-toned furniture shows up well against the light walls. Mary likes to show people up in public. You never know when she is coming: she just shows up when she feels like it., Method used:,The teacher first explains the meaning of each phrase used in the text and the students are asked to guess the meaning of the same phrase used in different sentences and translate them into good Chinese. Then the teacher should make some comments if necessary.,B. Fast Reading Training( On the precondition that no students have read the 3 passages before- hand ) Procedure: Students are given 20 minutes in class to finish reading the 3 passages and answer 15 questions that follow. Then write their answers on a slip of paper. The teacher gives the key to each of the questions and students check their answers with ticks or crosses and then hand them in to the teacher. After class the teacher grades the students work and make some comments in the next class.,C. Assignment 1. Students work: To read the passage “Reading: Basic Principles” in Home Reading carefully and then answer the comprehension questions that follow on the basis of their understanding. 2.
