ChapterOneIntroductionFromtheresearchBackground,China’seconomydevelopmentduetoreformandopening-uppolicyandthenthiscountryhasundergonegreatchangesinmultipleaspects.ThereformoftechnologyhasinventedtheInternetthatenrichesthepeople’slife.Nowadayswiththepopularityofinternet.Inasense,thestudyontranslationofInternetcatchphraseshasthesignificanceoncross-culturalcommunication.Intheprocessofresearch,thefollowingmethodsaremainlyused.Startbyconsultingrelevantbooks,journalarticles,databases,andwebresources.Secondly,itiscomparedwiththeclassictranslation,therelevantmeansofInternetbuzzwordtranslationareexplored,andthenthemulticulturalconnotationcontainedinthesamewordisanalyzedbycomparativeanalysis,andfinallyaconclusionisdrawntosummarizeadeficiencyofthecurrentInternetbuzzwordtranslation,andthecorrespondingresearchmethodsareproposed.Theresearchobjectsandresearchscopeofthispapercanincludetheresearchresultsofpredecessors,majornewspapers,Weibo,TikTok,Bilibiliandotherpopulardomesticappsandsoon.ContemporarynetworkbuzzwordsnotonlyattractChinesepeoplefromallwalksoflife,butalsoattracttheattentionofforeignmedia.SomeChinesenetworkbuzzwordshavebeenquotedinforeignarticles,anditisnothardtoseethattheyhavebecomeanindispensablepartofcommunication.Languageandculturehaveverycloserelationship.ThefamouslinguistLuoChangpeisaid:“languageisanationalculturalcrystallization.Thepastofthisnationneedsittopassonandthefutureneedsittopushon.Chinaisanancientnationwithdeeplyrootedculture.Chinesereflectsnotonlyhistoricalculture,butalsothepresentcultureofChina.ChineseInternetcatchphrasesaretheproductionofsocialandlanguagedevelopment.TheyenrichtheChinesevocabularyandprovidealotofnewconcept,broadentheknowledgeofpeopleandinfluencepeople’slife,andtheyalsoreflecttheNetizensdesiretosomeextent.AsoneofthemostactivepartinmodernChineselanguage,InternetcatchphrasescarrythemostpopularthoughtofInternetculture.Forforeigners,thevocabularyisanefficientwaytounderstandChinaandlearnChinese.ForEnglishlearners,whattheycanlearnfromthecatchphrasesarenotonlyfashionphrasesandtranslationskills,butalsotheexpressionsofnativeculture.Theabilityofcross-culturalcommunicationisnotmerelyreflectedinknowingtheworldoutside,butnationalconditionsaswell.Therefore,studyingtranslationofChineseInternetcatchphraseshasthegreatsignificanceoncross-culturalcommunicationandcommunicationscience.ThestudyontranslationofInternetcatchphraseshasthesignificanceontranslationstudies.BecauseofitsobviouscharacteristicsoftheChineselanguage,Internetcatchphraseshavelinguisticandculturaluntranslatability.SoitisachallengetotranslateChineseInternetcatchphrases.ButthecreationintranslatingChineseInternetcatchphrasesprocesscanhighlightthefreshnessofnewwords.ItcanalsoaddmorenewChineseelementstoEnglishvocabularyandlettheworldknowChinabetter.StudyingtheC-EtranslationofChineseInternetcatchphrasesnotmerelycanhelpthetranslatorstounderstandthefashionableexpressions,butcanimprovetranslatorscapacityofdiscernmenttotranslationskills.ChapterTwoIntroductiontoInternetBuzzwordsTheintroductionofinternetbuzzwordsisdividedintoteoaspects.OntheonehandisthedefinitionoftheInternetbuzzwords,ontheotherhandisaboutformationofinternetbuzzwords.2.1DefinitionofInternetBuzzwordsNetworklanguagereferstothelanguagethatarisesfromthenetworkandisusedinnetworkcommunication,includingEnglishlettersandabbreviations,pinyin,punctuation,iconpicturesandtext.Theyusuallyhavesomespecialmeaningsandarewidelyusedinacertainsocialenvironmentforacertainperiodoftime.Internetbuzzwordswereoriginallyaspecificlanguageformedtoimprovetheefficiencyofonlinechatormeetspecificneeds.However,withthecontinuousinnovationofnetworktechnology,thislanguagehasrisenrapidlyandhasbeengreatlyintegratedintopeople'sdailylife.Indifferentsocialenvironments,thesocialcharacteristicsofbuzzwordsarealsodifferent,whichdeterminesthatthestudyofbuzzwordsshouldnotbelimitedtothelexicologyoflinguistics,butshouldbeanalyzedincombinationwithsociallife,cultureandpersonalsocialpsychology.ItisgenerallybelievedthatInternetbuzzwordsrefertotheformofChinesethatiswidelyspreadandusedbycertaingroupswithinacertainperiodoftime.Words,phrases,sentencesandevenwordcombinationsformnetworkkeywords.NetworklanguagewasoriginallybornontheInternet,createdbynetworkcitizens,andgivensomespecialconnotationsbynetizens.2.2FormationofInternetBuzzwordsCassirer,founderofthephilosophyofsymbolsinhumanculture,oncesaid,“Manshouldbedefinedasasymbolicanimalinsteadofarationalanimal.Evenwithoutsound,mancanuseexistingmaterialstocreateavastandrichsymbol.Mancanbuildhisworldofsignsoutofthemeagerandrarestmaterials.”Thisidearevealsman’sunchangingprimordialdrivetocreatesymbols.Thisdrivingforcedriveshumantoconstantlyimprovelanguage.Liketheecologicalevolutionofnature,languagealwaysevolvesinthedirectionneededforitssurvivalanddevelopment.Therefore,theevolutionoflanguageovertheyearsshowstheevolutionofTheTimes.Thelanguageofourcountryhas,onthewhole,undergonefourlarge-scalechanges.ThefirstchangeoccurredduringtheactiveperiodofclassicalculturefromtheWesternZhouDynastytotheQinDynasty,whenChinesecharactersfirstunderwentthebaptismofpottery,oracleboneinscriptions,goldinscriptionsandstonedruminscriptions.Later,aftertheQinDynastyunifiedthewritingsystem,thelanguagewasforthefirsttimeshapedintoacompleteblockcharacter.Thesecondchangeoccurredinthewesternhandynastytothetangdynastyperiod,westernregionsZhangQiantong,dynastyandforeignculturalexchange,theinfluxofforeignwords,languageisagreatinnovationanddevelopment.Thethirdchangeinmoderntimes,especiallyafterthemayfourthperiodofthenewculturemovement,coinedwordsbroughtalargenumberofforeignwordsandscholarslanguageinnovationstrength,coupledwiththeimplementationofthemovement,thelanguagebefree.Thepopularwordsofthisperiodreflectedtheturbulentpoliticalsituationandcenteredonthepoliticalfiguresandphenomenaatthattime,suchasthe“linestruggle”,“takingsides”,“BlackFivecategories”,“Onefightandthreerebels”duringtheCulturalRevolution,“levelingtherebellion”,“goingtosea”,“tenthousandYuanhouseholds”intheearlystageofreformandopeningup,etc.Forthefourthtime,withtheapplicationanddevelopmentofInternettechnology,networklanguageandnetworkbuzzwordsemergedandlanguagechangedunprecedentedly.Afterthat,theevolutionofnetworkbuzzwordsinChinacanbedividedintothreeperiods:thebuddingperiodfrom1994to2002,thedevelopmentperiodfrom2003to2009,andtheupsurgeperiodfrom2010to2020.culturemovement,coinedwordsbroughtalargenumberofforeignwordsandscholarslanguageinnovationstrength,coupledwiththeimplementationofthemovement,thelanguagebefree.Thepopularwordsofthisperiodreflectedtheturbulentpoliticalsituationandcenteredonthepoliticalfiguresandphenomenaatthattime,suchasthe“linestruggle”,“takingsides”,“BlackFivecategories”,“Onefightandthreerebels”duringtheCulturalRevolution,“levelingtherebellion”,“goingtosea”,“tenthousandYuanhouseholds”intheearlystageofreformandopeningup,etc.Forthefourthtime,withtheapplicationanddevelopmentofInternettechnology,networklanguageandnetworkbuzzwordsemergedandlanguagechangedunprecedentedly.InternetoriginatedintheUnitedStatesin1969.TheU.S.DepartmentofDefenselaunchedacomputerInternetcalledARPANET.Subsequently,in1993,AmericanstudentMarkAndersonandothersinventedarealbrowsercalledMosaic,whichwasthenputonthemarket,causinganexplosivepopularityoftheInternetallovertheworld.ChinaenteredtheInternetfamilyonApril20,1994.Sincethen,theInternethasflourishedinChina.Fortenconsecutiveyears,thenumberofChinesenetizensin2014was338timesthatof2005,whichisalsoaworldmiracleofthetransformationofnetizens.The21stCNNICsurveyreportfirstanalyzedthestructureofChinesenetizensandfoundthatthenumberofnetizensundertheageof18andovertheageof30increasedrapidly.Accordingtothelatestreportof,thesizeofChina'snetizensandthenumberofnationaltop-leveldomainnameregistrationsarethefirstintheworld,andthelevelofInternetdevelopmentrankssecondintheworld.From2012to2021,thenumberofnetizensinChinaincreasedfrom564millionto1.032billion,andtheInternetpenetrationrateincreasedfrom42.1%to73%.Overthepastfewdecades,theinternethasdevelopedrapidlyandhasbeenpopularizedinthehandsofthepeople.Asanewcarrier,theInternethascreatedanewwayofinformationdisseminationandbecomeaninnovationofnetworkcommunicationandsocialconcepts,thusforminganewlanguagevariant-networkbuzzwords.WiththeemergenceofInternetbuzzwordsontheInternet,thenumberofInternetbuzzwordsisgraduallyincreasing.NewhotwordsontheInternethaveagreatinfluence.ThemainusersoftheInternetareyoungpeoplewhothinkactively,likenovelty,liketocommunicate,andyearnforinnovationandfashion.Inthisanonymousonlineworld,youngpeoplearegivenmorespacetoexpresstheirideas.TheyhavegenerallyreceivedhighereducationandarefamiliarwithcomputersandEnglish.Sothisgroupofpeoplehasappealandappeal,sosincetheemergenceofInternetbuzzwords,thesewordscanquicklyspreadonthewholeInternet.Therearefourwaystoformonlinebuzzwords:newwords,foreignwords,newmeaningsofoldwords,andmathematicalmethods.First.ChineseNeologism:Afterenteringthenewera,people'sideasbegintochange,whichrequiresmorerichandvividlanguageforcommunication.Therefore,manywordswerenewlycreatedbyonlinenamesandlaterdescribedsomething,suchas“involute”-内卷,“mortageslave”-房奴.Second.Foreignwords:Foreignwordsareanimportantsocio-linguisticphenomenonandmeansofwordexpansion,whichistheresultoffrictionbetweendifferentlanguagesandcultures.Withtheincreasingbreadthofinternationalcommunication,theChinesenetwork.Buzzwordshaveabsorbedandevolvedforeignelements,suchasclone,shopping,etc.MostofthesewordsarebasedonEnglish.Third.NewCreatedcatchwords:Manybuzzwordsevolvedfromexistingwordsandphrases,whichareeasytorememberandcanreflectsocialtrendsincertainspecificenvironments,catertopeople'spsychologicalneedsandreflecttheirrealthoughts.Forexample,“Youknowwhat1say”,wegenerallyuseittoexpress.Bothsidesknowthesamething,andthereisnoneedtosayitdirectly;“不管你信不信,反正我信了”-“Believeitornot,IAmconvinced”andsoon.Four.Digitalmethod:Thenumericalmethodisconvenient,easytounderstand,andeuphemistic,suchas“7456issoangry”and“1314foralifetime”andsoon.2.3BasicCharacteristicsofInternetBuzzwordsThefirstcharacteristicisinnovative.Whentheexistingwordsarenotenoughtoexplainthethingsproducedinthenewera,manypeoplewillchoosetocreatesomewordsorexpressionsthatwerenotnewbefore.RecentlytheinternethasoccuredthechatGPT.Thesecondcharacteristicisinstability.Internetbuzzwordsareeasytochangeorrefresh.Thewords“shenma”and“lyinggun”arerarelyseenatpresent.Withthecontinuousdevelopmentofnewwords,Internetbuzzwordsdevelopfasterthandailywords.Thethirdcharacteristicis“theprincipleofsavingtimeandeffort”.Internetbuzzwordsaregenerallyconciseandclear,whichisconsistentwithdailylanguage.Thelabor-savingprinciplecanmakeinformationthemosteffectiveanddirectdissemination,andmanybuzzwordsarecreatedinthisway.ChapterThreeEnglishtranslationofChineseInternetBuzzwords“Translationisquiteacomplexaswellaschallengingactivity.Translatorsareoftenperplexedbysomecontradictionsandareofteninadilemma”,saidJeremy(2001).REF_Ref1095615631\r\hREF_Ref1108254495\r\h[1]28Oneofthecontradicationsintranslationishowtodealwiththerelationofdomesticationandforeignization.Generallyspeaking,thesearetwooppositetranslationstrategies.3.1TranslationstrategiesTwotranslationstrategiesincludedomesticationandforeignization.TheconceptofDomesticationandalienationwasfirstproposedbytheGermantheologianandtranslatorSchleiermacher.Foreignization,aforeignizingmethod,anethnodeviantpressureonthose(cultural)valuestoregisterthelinguisticandculturaldifferenceoftheforeigntext,sendingthereadingabroad.3.1.1DomesticationTheconceptofDomesticationandalienationwasfirstproposedbytheGermantheologianandtranslatorSchleiermacher.Inapaperin1813,heproposed:“Translatorseithertrynottodisturbtheauthorandletthereadergetclosertotheauthor;ortrynottodisturbthereader,lettheauthortrytogetasclosetothereader.”However,Scherimacherdidnotdiscusstheapplicationofthetwointranslationpractice.ThetheoryofDomesticationandalienationisclearlyputforwardincontemporarytranslationtheorybytheItalian-AmericanscholarLawrencevenuti,whowroteinTheTranslator'sInrisibilityin1995:Schleiermacherusedaqualifierlike“trying”toshowthathealsoknewthatthetranslationcouldnotcompletelyreproducetheoriginalstyle.InthisbookLawrencevenuti(1995)said:“domesticationtranslation”referstoatranslationstrategywithatransparentandsmoothstyle.REF_Ref1104993937\r\h[2]20Transparencymeansthatthetranslatorcannotbeseenfromthetranslation,andthetranslatedreaderisculturallyoriented,soastoreducethereader'sstrangenesswiththetranslatedtext.Toputitmoresimply,Domesticationisequivalenttothetraditionaltranslationprinciple-fluenttranslation.Domesticationisthetranslationoftheprocessinglanguageforms,habitsandculturaltraditionsoftheoriginallanguagecentertothetargetlanguagereaders.Basedontheprincipleof“closetotheequivalentofthetargetreader,thetranslatortranslatesthetextinlinewiththeculturaltraditionsandhabitsofthetargetlanguagereaders”.Therefore,translationcanachievefunctionalequivalence.InthefieldofWesterntranslation,naturalizedtranslationisthetoppriorityinthetranslationprocess.Domesticationbelievesthatthetranslatedversionshouldgivemoreconsiderationtothetargetlanguageandthetargetreader,andfocusonthereader,soastoeliminateculturalbarriersandachievetheequivalencebetweenthetranslatedversionandthesourcetext.Nidaistherepresentativeofthisview.HepointedoutthatDomesticationshouldbetheprincipleandmethodoftranslation.Translationshouldbereader-centered.Hebelievesthatintermsofvocabularyandwritingstyle,thebesttranslationshouldbefullyintegratedintothetargetlanguagereaderandmeetthereadingstyleandpsychologyofthetargetreader.Domesticationstrategyallowstheacceptanceandreadabilitytotheutmost.Itcanminimizethedifficultiesofunderstandingandaccentanceiftargetlanguagereadersdonotunderstandoriginalculture.Forexample,“totreaduponeggs”IsequivalenttoChineseidioms“如履薄冰”.Thedomesticationstrategyautossculturalbarriers,sothattargetlanguagereaderscanhaveanaccurateunderstandingoftranslationversion.Italsodemonstratesthatdomesticationstrategyisaneffectivewaytodealingwithculturaldifferences.Thereforewhenitcomesintolanguageforms,thetranslatorsshouldstressdomesticationstrategy.Translatorscanusedomesticationtoensurethereadabilityandfrequencyoftranslatedversions,whileallowingtargetlanguagereaderstounderstandtheculturalconnotationofnetworkslogans.Onlybyensuringthatthetargetlanguagereadersfullyunderstandthetranslatedversioncantranslationpromoteculturalexchangeanddissemination.SomearticlesstudiedC-translationstrategiesofnetworkcatchwordsfromdomesticationandforeignizationpointofview.SuchasTranslationStrategiesofNetworkCatchwordsfromDomesticationandForeignizationPointofViewbyYanHaiyang.Domesticationisgoodfortheculturalexchangeandimprovednationalculturalstatus.Intermsoftranslationmethodsinculturalworks,theprincipleoffunctionalequivalenceshouldbemainlyusedtodealwithlanguagedifferences,thatis,todealwithnaturalisation.3.1.2ForeignizationInthisbookLawrencevenuti(1995)alsosaid“foreignizationtranslation”isalsoknownas“impedancetranslation”,whichreferstoretainingtheheterogene.REF_Ref1104993937\r\h[2]19Thetranslationstrategyofbreakingthetargetlanguagenormshastheoriginallanguageculturalorientation.Foreignization,aforeignizingmethod,anethnodeviantpressureonthoseculturalvaluestoregisterthelinguisticandculturaldifferenceoftheforeigntext,sendingthereadingabroad.Foreignizationisanapproachthatthetranslatorleavestheauthorinpeace,asmuchaspossible,andmovesthereadertowardshim.Venutialsobelievesthatthealienationmethodusesnon-racismtoimposethelinguisticandculturalcharacteristicsofforeigntextsontheculturalvalueoftranslation,andtobringreadersintoforeignsituations.(Venuti,1995)REF_Ref1104993937\r\h[2]19-20.Fromtheperspectiveofliterature,cultureandpolitics,hesuggestedusingalienationtranslationstrategies.Alienationisthetranslationofthelanguagestructure,habitsandculturaltraditionsofthesourcelanguagereadersbythesourcelanguagecenter.Translatorsusethesourcelanguageformandculturaltraditionasmuchaspossible,andhighlighttheexoticisminthetranslatedversion.Venutiarguedthatthetranslatedversionshouldtakeintoaccountthecultureoftheoriginaltextandtheauthor’suseofwordstoemphasizethedifferencesbetweencultureandlanguage.Thisstillrequiresaalienationstrategy.Thealienationstrategycanretainthelanguagecharacteristicsandculturalconnotationofthesourcelanguage,sothatthetargetlanguagereaderscanbetterunderstandtheessenceofthesourcelanguageculture.Thealienationstrategynotonlyintroducesthesourcelanguageculturetothetargetlanguagereaders,butalsoprovideslocalreaderswiththeopportunitytofamiliarisethemselveswithdifferentforeignhistoryandculturalknowledge.Thiskindoftranslationenablesreaderstomaximisetheirexposuretoforeigncultures,whichisalsopartofculturalexchange.ProfessorWangDongfengbelievesthatthequestionsencounteredbytranslatorsintranslationarenothingmorethanlanguageandculturaldifferences.Forthesetwodifferences.Todealwithculturaldifferences,hesaidshouldmainlybealienation,withnecessaryannotations.Foreignizationcankeepthelanguagefeaturesandculturalconnotations.Anditnotonlyhelpstoenrichtargetlanguageexpressionformsbutalsomeetreadersunderstandingofforeignculture.3.2TranslationMethodsThissectionmainlyintroducesthreetranslationmethods,includingliteralTranslation,freetranslation,substitutionmethod.3.2.1LiteralTranslationLiteraltranslationmeansthattheoriginallanguageisdirectlytranslatedintothetargetlanguageundertheconditionthatthecontent,formandstructureoftheoriginaltextremainunchanged.Thistranslationmethodcanbeappliedwhenthefunctionequivalenceexistsintheoriginallanguageandthetargetlanguage(Nida,1964).REF_Ref1194558440\r\h[3]152-157Duetothediversityoflivingenvironments,people'sculturesmaybedifferent.However,amongthesedifferences,therearestillsomesimilarities.Inmostcases,similarityisthebasicprincipleoftranslation.Insomecases,theremaybeanexactwordinthetargetlanguagetodescribefromotherlanguages.Unfortunately,duetoculturaldifferences,texttranslationoftencausesambiguityormisunderstanding.Sometimes,eventheobjectofonelanguagecanfindtheexactwordinanotherlanguage.Duetodifferentculturalconnotations,differencesstillexist.Therefore,translatorsshouldfirstunderstandthespecificculturaldifferencesbetweenthetwolanguages,andthenusethismethodwhennecessary.Whenstartingtotranslatenetworkslogans,literaltranslationshouldbemainlyused,notothermethods.Texttranslationisnotonlyanidealwaytoexpressthetrueintentionofwordstoreaders,butalsoanidealwaytofamiliariseWesternerswithChineseculture,spreadourownculture,andfaithfullyexpresstheinnermeaningoftheoriginaltext.Therefore,literaltranslationcanbeusedbeforeothermethods,aslongasitdoesnotviolateanytranslationrulesandconformstothemethodofexpression.Aslongasthetranslationmethoddoesnotcauseanyambiguityandmisunderstanding,literaltranslationplaysanimportantrole.Inpractice,manynetworksloganstranslatedbyliteraltranslationarewidelyacceptedandusedinWesternsociety.Therefore,aslongasitdoesnotcausemisunderstandingandambiguity,literaltranslationshouldbeapreferredtranslationmethod.Forexample,in2011,theword“伤不起”firstappearedinanarticle.Later,manynetworkcitizensrespondedtotheuseofthisword,andthenthewordbecameanetworkslogan.“Can'taffordtohurt”notonlyboastsofaperson’shumour,butalsorepresentsasensitiveperson’semotions.Thiswordisusuallytranslatedasfragileor“easytogethurt”isthetitleoftheTVseries,whichtellsthestoryofagroupofyoungpeopleworkinghardtorealisetheirdreamsaftergraduation.Oncereleased,thewordattractstheattentionofnetizensandiswidelyaccepted.InEnglish,“battle”maymeantheexactmeaningofChinesecharacters.CapsuleapartmentoriginatedinJapanandreferstoanapartmentshapedlikeacapsule.Itmeansthatthespaceoftheapartmentisverysmall.Thetranslatedversionof“胶囊公寓”notonlyretainstheoriginalimage,butalsoconveysasenseofconnotation.“犀利哥”wasreportedbytheBritishIndependentDailyonMarch4,2010.Thetitleis“HandsomeChinesetrampattractsfansof'homelessfashion”,andcallshim"ShapeBrothers"inthearticle.“瓶颈”referstosomedifficultiesorobstaclesencounteredintheprocess.Thesituationhasenteredadifficultperiod.Progresswillbemadeacrossit;otherwise,itmaystagnate.Inforeigncountries,“瓶颈”hasasimilarmeaning.Therefore,“bottleneck”iswidelyused.“Empty-nestoldman”referstotheoldcouplewhosechildren
