Answer all the questions following each passages on the basis of what is stated or implied in that passage. You are to choose ONE best answer A), B), C) or D), to each question and mark the corresponding letter on your Answer Card with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 based on the following passage Massive changes in all of the worlds deeply cherished sporting habits are underwayWhether its one of Londons parks full of people playing softball, and Russians taking up rugy(橄榄球) ,or the Superbowl rivaling the British Football Cup Final as a televised spectator event in Britain, the patterns of players and spectators are changing beyond recognition. We are witnessing a globalization of our sporting culture. That annual bicycle race, the Tour de France, much loved by the French is a good case in point. Just a few years back it was a strictly continental affair with France,Belgium and Holland,Spain and Italy taking part. But in recent years it has been dominated by Colombian mountain climbers, and American and Irish riders. The people who really matter welcome the shift toward globalization. Peugeot,Michelin and Panasonic are all multi-national corporations that want worldwide returns for the millions they invest in team. So it does them literally a world of good to see this unofficial world championship become just that. This is undoubtedly an economic-based revolution we are witnessing here, one made possible by technology, but made to happen because of marketing considerations The skilful way in which American football has been sold to Europe is a good example of how all sports will develop. The aim of course is not really to spread the 成 绩 2 sport for its own sake, but to increase the number of people interested in the major money-making events. The economics of the Superbowl are already astronomical With seats at US $125, gate receipts alone were a staggering $10,000,000 So it came as a terrible shock, but not really as a surprise,to learn that some people are now suggesting that soccer change from being a game of two 45-minute halves,to one of four 25-minute quartersThe idea is unashamedly to capture more advertising revenue, without giving any thought for the integrity of a sport which relies for its essence on the flowing nature of the action. Moreover,as sports expand into world markets, and as our choice of sports as consumers also grows,so we will demand to see them played at a higher and higher level. 1. Globalization of sporting culture means that_. A) more people are taking up sports B) traditional sports are getting popular C) many local sports are becoming international D) foreigners are more interested in local sports 2. What does the sentence “So it does them literally a world of good to see this unofficial world championship become just that”(Lines3-4,Para.3) imply? A) The multi-national corporations are proud of the popularity of the games they sponsor. B) The multi-national corporations are glad to see the world become better. C) The multi-national corporations can benefit a lot from the globalization of the games. D) The multi-national corporations tend to sponsor more local and national games. 3. We know from the passage that the revolution we are witnessing here should be based on_. A) sports B) economic C) people D) government 4. The authors attitude towards the suggestion to change soccer into one of four 25- minute quarters is_. A) favorable B) unclear C) reserved D) critical 5. People want to see higher-level sports competitions mainly because_. A) they become more professional than ever B) they regard sports as consumer goods C) there exist few world-class championships D) sports events are exciting and stimulating Passage Two Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage Recent research had claimed that an excess of positive ions(离子)in the air can have an ill-effect on peoples physical or psychological healthWhat are positive ions? Well, the air is full of ions, electrically charged particles, and generally there is a rough balance between the positive and the negative chargesBut sometimes this balance becomes disturbed and a larger proportion of positive ions are foundThis happens naturally before thunderstorms, earthquakes or when winds are blowing in 上海大学 2009 2010 学年 秋 季 (外国语学院大学英语部选修课程:A 级) 3 certain countriesOr it can be caused by a buildup of static electricity indoors from carpets or clothing made of man-made fibers,or from TV sets, duplicators or computer display screens When a large number of positive ions are present in the air many people experience unpleasant effects such as headaches, fatigue, irritability ,and some particularly sensitive people suffer nausea(恶心) or even mental disturbanceAnimals are also found to be affected, particularly before earthquakes;snakes have been observed to come out of hibernation(冬眠) ,rats to flee from their burrows, dogs howl and cats jump about unaccountablyThis has led the US Geographical Survey to fund a network of volunteers to watch animals in an effort to foresee such disasters before they hit vulnerable areas such as California Conversely, when large numbers of negative ions are present, then people have a feeling of well-beingNatural conditions that produce these large amounts are near the sea, close to waterfalls or fountains, or in any place where water is sprayed,or forms a sprayThis probably accounts for the beneficial effect of a holiday by the sea, or in the mountains with tumbling streams or waterfalls To increase the supply of negative ions indoors, some scientists recommend the use of ionisers:small portable machines which generate negative ionsThey claim that ionisers not only clean and refresh the air but also improve the health of people sensitive to excess positive ionsOf course, there are the detractors, other scientists, who dismiss such claims and are skeptical about negative or positive ion researchTherefore people can only make up their own minds by observing the effects on themselves, or on others,of a negative rich or poor environmentAfter all, it is debatable whether depending on seismic readings to anticipate earthquakes is more effective than watching the cat 6. What effect does excessive positive ionisation have on some people? A) They think they are mad B)They feel very tired C) They become violently sick D)They are too tired to do anything 7. According to the passage, static electricity can be caused by_. A) using home-made electrical goods B) wearing clothes made of natural materials C) walking on artificial floor coverings D) copying TV programs on a computer 8. By observing the behavior of animals, scientists may be able to_. A) prevent disasters B) organize groups of people C) predict earthquakes D) control areas of California 9. A high negative ion count is likely to be found_. A) near a pond with a water pump B) close to a slow-flowing river C) high in some barren mountains D) by a rotating water sprinkler 10. People should be able to come to a decision about ions in the air if they _. A) note their own reactions B) move to a healthier area C) observe domestic animals D) watch how wealthy people behave Passage Three 4 Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage The“standard of living”of any country means the average persons share of the goods and services which the country produces A countrys standard of living, therefore ,depends first and foremost on its capacity to produce wealth. “Wealth”in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy: “goods”such as food and clothing, and “services” such as transport and entertainment A countrys capacity to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one anotherWealth depends to a great extent upon a countrys natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so onThe USA is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she had vast natural resources within her borders, her soil is fertile, and her climate is varied. The Sahara Desert,is on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy Next to natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. Some countries are perhaps well off in natural resources, but suffered for many years from civil and external wars, and for this and other reasons have been unable to develop her resourcesSound and stable political conditions, and freedom from foreign invasion, enable a country to develop its natural resources, peacefully and steadily, and to produce more wealth than another country equally well served by nature but less well ordered. Another important factor is the technical efficiency of a countrys peopleIndustrialized countries that have trained numerous skilled workers and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled. A countrys standard of living does not only depend upon the wealth that is produced and consumed within its own borders, but also upon what is indirectly, produced through international tradeFor example, Britains wealth in foodstuffs and other agricultural products would be much less if she had to depend only on those grown at homeTrade makes it possible for her surplus manufactured goods to be traded abroad for the agricultural products that would otherwise be lackingA countrys wealth is,therefore, much influenced by its manufacturing capacity, provided that other countries can be found ready to accept its manufactures 11. The standard of living in a country is determined by_. A) its goods and service B) the type of wealth produced C) how well it can create wealth D)what an ordinary person can share 12. The main idea of the second paragraph is that_. A) a countrys wealth depends on many factors B) the USA is one of the wealthiest countries in the world C) the Sahara Desert is a very poor region D) natural resources is an important factor in the wealth or poverty of a country 13. What does the author mean by giving the examples of the USA and the Sahara Desert in Paragraph Two? A) The USA is the wealthiest country in the world while the Sahara Desert is the poorest region 上海大学 2009 2010 学年 秋 季 (外国语学院大学英语部选修课程:A 级) 5 B) Some regions of the world are well supplied with natural resources while other regions possess none of them. C) Some countries can better use natural resources while other countries have been unable to develop heir resources. D) The USA has a sound and stable political condition while the Sahara Desert has suffered for many years from civil wars. 14. A countrys capacity to produce wealth depends on_. A) peoples share of its goods B) political and social stability C) qualities of its employers D) development of artificial resources 15) According to the passage, what plays an equally important role in determing a countrys standard of living?
