EU Opens Online Library Call it the 21st century version of the famous Alexandria library that served as a hub of knowledge in ancient times. Europe is offering a similar trove of information via the Internet - allowing users to access tens of thousands of paintings, books, manuscripts, sound recordings, newspapers and other items from across the European Union. European Commission spokesman Martyn Selmayr says the Europeana digital library is planning to expand enormously in the years to come. “Today is just the beginning,“ he said. “We have two million objects today on Europeana - cultural objects which exist in digital form. Our objective is to have by the year 2010, 10 million digitized objects available from all over Europe and they will be offered in 23 languages so everybody around the world has access to these cultural heritages of the European Union member states. That includes digitalized representations of masterpieces from the Louvre museum in Paris or manuscripts of composers like Beethoven - or books from libraries around Europe - although only a small fraction of the regions 2.5 billion books will be available online in the coming years. The project is one way to showcase the European Union - this time through its cultural heritage. “On the one side it shows that Europe is made up not of a single unified culture but that it has 27 nations and each one of them has a very long history,“ said Selmayr. “It also shows what we have in common and gives the perspective of the neighbors.“ “For example, thats very interesting to see that the fall of the Berlin Wall - very important for German history and also for European history - is something you can find on Europeana in the form of a film that is today stored in the French national audiovisual institute. So Germans, Hungarians, British citizens and also Americans can see this big event, but through the eyes of French citizens,“ he continued. Western Classical Music Gains Popularity in Kenya Tenor Zac Njoroge is on his way to Israel, where he was given a music scholarship to study performance and conducting. The 21-year-old, who dreams of starting up an opera house in Kenya, says classical music is his passion. “My dad used to play this in the car, everywhere, as we were going to church,“ Njoroge said. “He used to play this music at home. So it really got into me. Then he had to buy me a piano to start training myself on how to play the piano.“ Njoroge was one of three Kenyan tenors who sang recently in honor of Luciano Pavarotti, the late Italian tenor who Njorge hopes to emulate. Kenyas boom in classical music is especially pronounced among the young. Enrollment in private tutoring sessions at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music has gone up 25 percent within the past two years. Three radio stations in Kenya now offer regular classical music programming. Elizabeth Njoroge studied classical music abroad. Back home the soprano not only performs, this year she also founded the magazine Classics, for Kenyas classical musical lovers. “In Kenya as a whole I think there has been a rebirth of the arts, and not just music“. “There are also a lot more plays happening, more art exhibitions.“ Njoroge says the countrys growing middle class now has more money, time and other resources to appreciate and pursue the arts. Kenya has a rich heritage of traditional music, with the countrys many ethnic cultures having distinctive instruments and beats. Music teacher Lola Akwabi says she thinks the presence of western classical music in Kenya does not detract from the countrys homegrown music, that there is room for both. “It is very interesting that someone will actually walk in here and tell me, you know why are you doing this Western culture, why arent you doing your African culture? And I am thinking, you should be dressed in a skin, speaking Swahili asking me that question,“ Akwabi said. Any debate over Kenyas native music is far from student Jonathan Wamukotas mind. He says he loves Beethovens “Moonlight Sonata.“ “A nice, still water edge, it is just as the moon is rising and just a sliver of moonlight pierces through the trees and just lands on the water and the reflection is slowly dancing there“. Images and beauty Wamukota says he gets from the music he loves. 题目:题目:1.Bach, Beethoven and other giants of Western popular music are becoming more of a hit in Kenya, especially among young people. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 7.00 题目:题目:2.Njoroge was one of three Kenyan tenors who sang recently in honor of Luciano Pavarotti, the late Kenyan tenor who Njorge hopes to emulate. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 7.00 题目:题目:3.Enrollment in public tutoring sessions at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music has gone up 2.5 percent within the past two years. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 7.00 题目:题目:4.The presence of western classical music in Kenya does detract from the countrys homegrown music, that there is no room for both actually. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 7.00 题目:题目:5.Kenya has a rich heritage of traditional music, with the countrys many ethnic cultures having distinctive instruments and beats. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 6.00 2.Exercise 2:Focus-listening: Listen to the passage and fill in blanks with the missing information. Americans Have Longstanding Love Affair with Chocolate Chocolate is as big a part of American culture as baseball and apple pie. But its roots run much deeper. Made from the seed of the tropical cacao tree, chocolate dates back at least 3,000 years to the ancient civilizations of Central and South America, where the cacao tree is native. The Aztec people valued the trees cocoa beans so much, they used them as currency. In what is now Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, in the southwestern United States, new archaeological evidence shows that people were eating chocolate here more than 1,000 years ago. And theyre still at it. Today, the average American eats almost 5 kilograms of chocolate each year. Cheri Friedman knows how much America loves chocolate. She is co-owner of Kron Chocolatiers, a small, gourmet chocolate shop that opened 32 years ago in Washington, D.C. “I think its one of the best comfort foods there is. Its easy to eat. It melts in your mouth. Theres a warm sensation,“ Friedman says she takes pride in the fact that Krons chocolates are made with the finest ingredients, right on the premises. “You can definitely taste the difference between something thats just been poured, hot off the presses to having sat on the shelf for three to six months; some of the larger corporations tend to do. Friedmans partner and Krons chief chocolate-maker, Trish Schutz, says the shop is doing well, with good reason. “Well, its very good chocolate, and we have a large return client base that comes back and back.“ Dan Melman is one of those clients. “The cream truffles they make here are so decadent I remember reading about them years ago and tried them, and Ive continued to come back again and again, calling them“ (Chocolate stores spread nationwide) Americans love of chocolate has helped to make it a big business in this country. Mark Sesler is senior vice president of marketing at Russell Stover Candies, one of the largest manufacturers of chocolate in the US. According to Sesler, the industry got its start in the early 1900s with small-scale chocolatiers such as Steven Whitman, and Claire and Russell Stover. They started with small stores - much like Kron - but soon expanded their business into broader markets - thanks, Sesler notes, to an important technological advance. “Its the advent of refrigeration that has really made the availability of chocolate very prevalent throughout the United States, I think Chocolate has secured its place as a delectable treat for a number of societies and a number of countries so I think we are just one of the many countries to enjoy the delicacy that is chocolate.“ 题目:题目:1.The Aztec people valued chocolate so much, they used them as currency. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 6.00 题目:题目:2.In what is now Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, in the southwestern United States, new archaeological evidence shows that people were eating chocolate here more than 3,000 years ago. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 6.00 题目:题目:3.There is some difference between the chocolate thats just been poured, hot off the presses, and the chocolate that has sat on the shelf for three to six months. 文本: 你的答案: T 正确答案: T 得分: 6.00 题目:题目:4.Kron Chocolatiers, a big, gourmet chocolate shop has a large return client base that comes back and back. 文本: 你的答案: F 正确答案: F 得分: 6.00 2.Passage One Exercise 2: Focus-listening: Listen to this passage and fill in blanks with the missing information.
