I have been into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play. When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts (选拔赛) and put out about 90% effort since I thought Id make it with no problem. That was a big mistake.Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didnt expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) after we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isnt. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “Coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand lifes challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual. 21. Different from other coaches, Coach Brian _. A. trained the team to the edge of death B. expected the team to do well in their studies C. asked the team to do more reading than training D. concentrated on skill training22. The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means _. A. made less effortB. paid no attention C. showed no interest D. had less passion23. In the authors eye, Coach Brian is _. A. professional and serious B. skilled and cruelC. hardworking and honest D. strict and helpfulBClaude Sammut, a professor of computer science and engineering at the University of New South Wales in Australia, said it would soon be possible for robots to defeat the stars of the future. For many years, Mr. Sammut has been a member of a project called RoboCup, where robots have been programmed to learn how to play football and compete against others in a football match. As he explains, the robots are having difficulty in learning how to control the ball and move the ball on their own, but he is still full of confidence that one day in the future they will show the same skills as Wayne Rooney, who is one of the best football players in the world.Mr. Sammut also said,“In 1968, John McCarthy and Donald Michie made a bet with David Levy, who was then the chess champion in Scotland, that within 10 years a computer program would be able to beat him. It took a little bit longer than 10 years (nearly 30 years) but eventually such programs came into being.”“In the same spirit of a grand challenge, RoboCup aims to develop a team of robots that can defeat the world soccer champion team by the year 2050. To achieve this, or come even closer to the ambition, the robots will have to be able to sense and act in completely unstructured environments. This will require major advances in perception(感知), decision making, learning, and cooperative behaviors. Considering robots are integrated hardware and software systems, great advances will also be needed in sensors (传感器) , energy storage, and materials.”24. The RoboCup is aimed to develop robots that know how to _. A. play computer football games B. play football and win in real matches C. understand the rules of the football game D. improve the skills of real football players25. When her bodily rhythms get thrown off, she suffers from jet lag (时差) its hard to sleep and eat at the right times in the new locations. Humans and all living creatures have an internal biological clock that tells them when to sleep and when to be awake. Jet lag happens because this internal clock takes a while to match the day and night schedule of a new place. In a new study, scientists tested the effects of jet lag on hamsters (仓鼠) which might seem strange, since we dont usually think of hamsters as world travelers. But what happens to hamsters may happen to humans, too.The researcher didnt test just one bout of (一次) jet lag they wanted to know how chronic (长期的) jet lag would affect the brain and thinking behavior of the animals. Previous studies have shown that people with work schedules that change their sleep patterns over and over face higher risks of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Another, earlier study found a connection between cigarette smoking and people whose daily schedules dont follow their internal clocks a situation that often leaves them tired.First, the scientists moved the hamsters schedules forward by six hours. The animals eating schedules, for example, were changed. After three days, the scientists did it again they changed the hamsters schedules forward by another six hours. Three days after that, they did it again; and then again three days later. For a full month, the scientists changed the hamster routines every three days.Specifically, Gibsons team wanted to know how jet lag would affect the production of neurons, or nerve cells. People are born with many of the neurons theyll have their whole lives. But these cells also continue to be produced by a part of the brain that helps people store and sort memories, and can move to other parts of the brain. The hamsters with jet lag produced only about half as many neurons as before. Plus, the hamsters had trouble with basic learning exercises. That means jet lag “is having a long-term effect on learning and memory,” Gibson said.32. Why do travelers suffer from jet lag? A. Because travelers cover a long distance at a low speed. B. Because the bodily rhythms of travelers are at work. C. Because the biological clock of travelers fail to work. D. Because travelers cant adjust to a new environment. 33. How many times was the hamster routines changed in the study? A. 9.B. 10. C. 8.D. 11.34. According to the study, a person who always suffers from jet lag will _. A. produce more nerve cells. B. be effective in learning C. have a poor memory D. have to do more exercise35. The main idea of the passage is about _. A. hamsters are no good travelers B. travelers may have difficulty in learning C. people have different sleep patterns D. jet lag slows hamster brains第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文的内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两个多余选项。The benefits of keeping a journalIf you want to grow, one important thing you should do is keeping a journal.
