It wasnt forced on us either. He took Samuel Johnsons dictionary, Addisons essays, and many other literary wonders from the eighteenth century and made them hilarious, even at eight oclock in the morning. The thing that amazed me most was that the first time I read these works on my own some of them seemed dead, but the second time, after his explanation, I couldnt believe that I hadnt seen the humor. The stories and poems and plays were suddenly filled with allusions(典故) and irony and hilarious moments. I learned more from him than from any other teacher. My least favorite English teacher also made people laugh. Some students found him to be wonderfully funny. Many others did not. He assigned journals over a six-week-period, to be written in every day. At the end of the six weeks I had a notebook full of bits and pieces about my ideas, short stories and reactions to what we had read, and so on. Our teacher announced that we would be grading each others journals. Mine was passed to Joe, that class clown, who always behaved in a funny or silly way. He saw it fit to make joke of and said, “This writing isnt fit to line the bottom of a birdcage.” Our teacher laughed at that funny remark. It hurt me so much that the anger from it has driven my writing and teaching ever since. So what makes the difference? Humor is one of the most powerful tools teachers or writers have. It can build up students and classes and make them excited about literature and writing, or it can tear them apart. It is true that humor is either productive or counter-productive and self-defeating. 24. The passage mainly discusses _.A. teaching B. literature C. knowledge D. humor 25. The underlined word “hilarious” in Paragraph 1 probably means _.A. inspiring B. tiring C. funny D. brilliant 26. With his favorite English teacher, the writer found it most amazing that _.A. few were able to find humor in works by Johnson and others B. the works by Johnson and Addison were very humorousC. his teacher was very humorousD. his teacher was very learned27. The English teacher the writer disliked most _.A. hurt his students feelings C. was not able to make students laugh B. had no sense of humor D. didnt let his students do the gradingCChildrens lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did?Its difficult to look back on ones own childhood without some element of nostalgia(怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them, playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring the nearby woods. My parents hardly appear in these memories, except as providers either of meals or of severe blame after some particularly risky adventure. These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed greatly. Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isnt time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, todays boys and girls spend much of their time alone. Another major change is that youngsters today tend to spend a huge amount of their free time at home, inside. More than anything this is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldnt dream of letting their children play outside by themselves. Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different. Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The irony(令人啼笑皆非的事情)is that so many ways of playing games are called “interactive.” The fact that you can play electronic games on your own further increases the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today. Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.28. What is the purpose of the direct question given in the first paragraph?A. To compare the childhood lives of two generations. B. To get peoples attention and lead in the topic.C. To gather peoples opinions on childhood.D. To show who the passage is written for.29. Which is a reason for the changes? A. Parents worried too much about their children.B. Children play more interactive games. C. Its too dangerous to play outside.D. Families are bigger today.30. What does the writer focus on in the fourth paragraph?A. Young people today shouldnt play electronic games.B. Computer and video games have replaced the board games.C. Some games that young people play today arent really good.D. Board games are much more interesting than computer games.31. The writers attitude towards the childhood changing is _ .A. approving B. optimistic C. unconcerned D. objectiveDSometimes youll hear people say that you cant love others until you love yourself. Sometimes youll hear people say that you cant expect someone else to love you until you love yourself. Either way, youve got to love yourself first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that were the apple of our parents eyes, and that our Grandmas think were great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we will go to the Olympics, but sometimes its a lot harder to think such nice thoughts about ourselves. If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.Self-image is your own minds picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world. The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Dont allow doubts to occur in it. It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you cant move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think youre silly because you arent good at math, find a tutor. If you think youre weak because you cant run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think youre dull because you dont wear the latest trends, buy a few new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesnt mean its true. The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, youll know youre well on your way. Good luck! 32. You need to build a positive self-image when you _.A. dare to challenge yourselfB. feel it hard to change yourselfC. are unconfident about yourselfD. have a high opinion of yourself33. How should you change your self-image according to the passage?A. To change the way you think. B. To make your life successful.C. To understand your own world. D. To keep a different image of others.34. What is the passage mainly about?A. How to prepare for your success. B. How to build a positive self-image.C. How to face challenges in your life.D. How to develop your good qualities.35. Who are the intended readers of the passage?A. Parents.B. Educators.C. Adolescents.D. People in general.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。How to Make Plans Most people get scared when talking about planning or writing plans. 36 .
