But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical (经验的,实证的) basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation. Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a rooms ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook. In additions to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupants ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically, and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.Recent study on room lighting design suggests than dim (暗淡的) light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax. So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. We have a very limited number of studies, so were almost looking at the problem through a straw (吸管), architect David Allison says. How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? Thats what were all struggling with. 64. What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research? A. Light. B. Ceilings. C. Windows. D. Furniture.65. The passage tells us that _. A. the shape of furniture may affect peoples feelings B. lower ceilings may help improve students creativity C. children in a dim classroom may improve their grades D. students in rooms with unblocked views may feel relaxed66. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that _. A. the problem is not approached step by step B. the researches so far have faults in themselves C. the problem is too difficult for researchers to detect D. research in this area is not enough to make generalized patterns67. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage? CP: Central Point P: Point SP: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion Passage 2 It is hardly surprising that clothing manufacturers (生产商) follow certain uniform standards for various features of clothes. What seems strange, however, is that the standard adopted for women is the opposite of the one for men. Take a look at the way your clothes button. Mens clothes tend to button from the right, and womens form the left. Considering most of the worlds populationmen and womenare right-handed, the mens standard would appear to make more sense for women. So why do womens clothes button from the left?History really seems to matter here. Buttons first appeared only on the clothes of the rich in the 17th century, when rich women were dressed by servants. For the mostly right-handed servants, having womens shirts button from the left would be easier. On the other hand, having mens shirts button form the right made sense, too. Most men dressed themselves, and a sword drawn from the left with the right hand would be less likely to get caught in the shirt. Today women are seldom dressed by servants, but buttoning form the left is still the standard for them. Is it interesting? Actually, a standard, once set, resists change. At a time when all womens shirts buttoned form the left, it would have been risky for any single manufacturer to offer womens shirts that buttoned from the right. After all, women had grown so used to shirts which buttoned from the left and would have to develop new habits and skills to switch. Besides, some women might have found it socially awkward to appear in public wearing shirts that buttoned from the right, since anyone who noticed that would believe they were wearing mens shirts. 64. What is surprising about the standard of the clothing industry? A. It has been followed by the industry for over 400 years. B. It is different for mens clothing and womens. C. It works better with men than with women. D. It fails to consider right-handed people. 65. What do we know about the rich men in the 17th century? A. They tended to wear clothes without buttons. B. They were interested in the historical matters. C. They were mostly dressed by servants. D. They drew their swords from the left. 66. Womens clothes still button from the left today because _. A. adopting mens style is improper for womenB. manufacturers should follow standards C. modern women dress themselvesD. customs are hard to change67. The passage is mainly developed by _. A. analyzing causes B. making comparisons C. examining differences D. following the time order 话题5 世界环境 World & Environment 话题解析 人类所处的世界和环境是高考常见话题,包含内容较广泛。 Passage A Easter (复活节) is still a great day for worship, candy in baskets and running around the yard finding eggs, but every year it gets quite a bit worse for bunnies. And no, not because the kids like to pull their ears. The culprit is climate change, and some researchers found that rising temperatures are having harmful effects on at least five species of rabbit in the US. Take the Lower Keys Marsh rabbit, for instance. An endangered species that lives in the Lower Florida Keys, this species of cottontail is a great swimmerit lives on the islands!but it is already severely affected by development and now by rising sea levels. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, an ocean level rise of only 0.6 meters will send these guys jumping to higher ground and a 0.9-meter rise would wipe out their habitat completely. The snowshoe hare, on the other hand, has a color issue. Most of these rabbits change their fur color from white in the wintertime to brown in the summer, each designed to give them better cover from predators (捕食者). As the number of days with snow decreases all across the country, however, more and more bunnies are being left in white fur during brown dirt days of both fall and spring, making them an easier mark for predators. Researchers know that the color change is controlled by the number of hours of sunlight, but whether the rabbit will be able to adapt quick enough to survive is a big question. The National Wildlife Federation has reported that hunters have noticed their numbers are already markedly down. American pikas or rock rabbits, a relative of rabbits and hares, might be the first of these species to go extinct due to climate change. About 7-8 inches long, pikas live high in the cool, damp mountains west of the Rocky Mountains. As global temperatures rise, they would naturally migrate (迁移) to higher ground but they already occupy the mountaintops. They cant go any higher. The National Wildlife Federation reports that they might not be able to stand the new temperatures as their habitat heats up. The volcano rabbit has the same problem. These rabbits live on the slopes of volcanoes in Mexico, and recent studies have shown that the lower range of their habitat has already shifted upward about 700 meters, but there are not suitable plants for them to move higher, so they are stuck in the middle. Scientists are concerned about their populations. Native to the US, pygmy rabbits weigh less than 1 pound and live in the American West. They are believed to be the smallest rabbits in the world. Their habitats have been destroyed by development. Several populations, such as the Columbia Basin pygmy, almost went extinct and were saved by zoo breeding programs. Pygmy rabbits also rely on winter cover by digging tunnels through the snow to escape predators, but lesser snowfall is leaving them exposed. All of this gives new meaning to dressing up in a giant bunny costume this Easter.41 The writer mentions Easter at the beginning of the passage in order to_. A. show the importance of Easter DayB. introduce the issue about bunnies C. remind people of Easter traditions D. discuss the relationship between Easter and bunnies42. The word culprit (Paragraph 2) is closest in meaning to_. A. criminalB. judgeC. victimD. producer43. According to the passage, some rabbits can now be easily uncovered by predators because they_. A. are exposed lo more skillful huntersB. have moved to habitats with fewer plants C. havent adapted themselves to climate change D. cant change their fur color into white in the fall and the spring44. The problem faced by volcano rabbets and rock rabbits is that_. A. both are affected by 1ess snowB. both are affected by rising sea levels C. neither can find enough foodD. neither can migrate to higher places45 Which best describes the writers tone in the postage? A. Approving.B. Concerned.C. Enthusiastic.D. Doubtful.Passage B Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked. Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因构成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects. Exploration also allows minerals and other potential resources to be found. Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even non-stick pans and mirrored sunglasses are by-products (副产品) of technological developments in the space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human being to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.71. Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1? A. To express his doubts.B. To compare different ideas. C. To introduce points for discussion.D. To describe the conditions on Earth.72. What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2? A. Humans are nature-born to do so.B. Humans have the tendency to fight. C. Humans may find new sources of food.D. Humans dont like to stay in the same place.73. The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to_. A. survival chancesB. potential resourcesC. unexpected benefitsD. physical possessions74. What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets? A. Our genetic makeup.B. Resources on the earth. C. The adaptive ability of humans. D. By-products in space exploration.75. Which of the statements can best sum up the passage? A. Space exploration has created many wonders.B. Space exploration provided the best value for money. C. Space exploration can benefit science and technology. D. Space exploration may help us avoid potential problem on Earth.Passage C A rainforest is an area covered by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year and the temperature rarely dipping below l6. Rainforests have a great effect on the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect more heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially causing certain natural disasters all over the world. In the past hundred years, humans have begun destroying rainforests in search of three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals. This action affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People obviously have a need for the resources we gain from cutting trees but we will suffer much more than we will benefit. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, when people cut down trees, generally they can only use the land for a year or two. Secondly, cutting large sections of rainforests may provide a good supply of wood right now, but in the long run it actually reduces the worlds wood supply. Rainforests are often called the worlds drug store. More than 25 of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than lof rainforest plants have been examined for their medical value. It is ex
