Doggie!” I dropped what I was doing and stuck my head out of the door. Brandy, our next-door neighbors 11-year-old dog, was over again. “Go away!” I shouted. Brandys owner had died about a month earlier. The womans family had emptied the house and stuck a “For Sale” sign in the front yard, but the family had left old Brandy behind. For weeks, shed been wandering around the neighborhood. It wasnt that I disliked dogs or anything like that. I just didnt think about them very much. I never had a dog growing up and had never thought to get one. Brandy went away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone rang. I went inside to take the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I searched the yard, front and back, then the basketball court and public pool. No trace of him. I was so nervous that I ran home and called the police, then my husband. Police searched the neighborhood. Suddenly I heard another sound: a dog barking. “Its coming from the woods,” one of my neighbors said. We followed the barking to a wooded cliff (悬崖). There we found my son, and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast asleep. Brandy was beside him, leaning (倚靠) against him to keep him away from the edge. When I picked Adam up, Brandy sank down on her side, breathing quickly. She must have been holding Adam there for hours! I thanked the police and brought Adam and Brandy back to our house. She hesitated a moment on our doorstep, no doubt remembering the time Id driven her away. “Come on, girl.” I said. “This is your home now.” Brandy stepped in, and once she saw she was really welcome, she relaxed and lay down on the floor just inside the door. The study, conducted by neuroscientists (神经学家) and psychologist from the University of Maryland, concluded that women talked more because they had more of the Foxp2 protein. The research, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, found that higher levels were found among humans that were women but in rats that were males. Their findings came after it was previously claimed(声称) that ladies speak about 20,000 words a day over 13,000 more than men. “This study is one of the first to report a sex difference in the expression of a language-associated protein in humans or animals,” said Prof. Margaret McCarthy, who led the study. In their study, the researchers attempted to determine what might make male rats more vocal than their female friends. 6 They separated four-day-old rats from their mothers and then counted the number of times they cried out in the “ultrasonic (超声波的) range”, the frequencies higher than humans can hear, over five minutes. While both sexes called out hundreds of cries, the males called out twice as often, they found. But when the baby rats were returned to their mothers cage, she fussed over her sons first. Tests conducted on the parts of the brain known to be connected with vocal(声音的) calls showed the male baby rats have up to twice as much Foxp2 protein as the females. The researchers then increased the production in the brains of female baby rats and reduced it in males. This led to the female rats crying out more often and their mothers showing more interest to them. In contrast, males became less “talkative”. The researchers then tested samples from ten children, aged between three and five, which showed that females had up to 30 per cent more of the Foxp2 protein than males, in a brain area key to language in humans. “Based on our observations, we assume higher levels of Foxp2 in girls and higher levels of Foxp2 in male rats is an indication that Foxp2 protein levels are connected with the more communicative sex,” said Prof McCarthy. “Our results imply Foxp2 as a component (成分) of the neurobiological basis of sex differences in vocal communication in mammals(哺乳动物).” 28. From the second paragraph, we can learn that _. A. female rats have higher levels of Foxp2 than male rats B. men and male rats have low levels of language protein C. women and male rats have similar levels of Foxp2 D. McCarthy isnt the first to find females more talkative 29. The underlined phrase “fussed over” in the third paragraph probably means_. A. paid attention to B. related to C. put pressure on D. depended on 30. The researchers carried out the experiments on rats in order to _. A. test which part of the brain is key to language in rats and humans B. prove the levels of Foxp2 protein in humans and rats are different C. determine the reason why female rats are more talkative than male rats D. discover the association between Foxp2 protein and vocal communication 31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A. Tests on Humans and Rats B. Why Women Are the Talkative Sex C. Sex Differences in Foxp2 Protein D. Foxp2 Protein Determines Oral Ability D For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles. Dr Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense, they argue, the elevators role in American history has been no less 7 significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk, the car and the elevator have been locked in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them towards life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的) columns. If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experienceone that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothing in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that were hanging from a cable in a long passage. In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it,” Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learnt to cope with the mixture of closeness and displeasure.” That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives. Today, as the worlds urban population explodes, and cities become more crowded, taller, and more crowded, Americas total number of elevators 900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazines “2012 Vertical Transportation Industry” are a force thats becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are. 32. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A. The general view of elevators. B. The particular interests of experts. C. The desire for a remarkable machine. D. The enthusiasm for transport vehicles. 33. The authors purpose in mentioning cars is _. A. to contrast their functions with elevators B. to emphasize the importance of elevators C. to reveal their secret war against elevators D. to explain peoples preference for elevators 34. Uncomfortable conditions. 35. The author urges readers to consider _. A. the exact number of elevator lovers B. the serious future situation of elevators C. the role of elevators in city development D. the relationship between cars and elevators 第二节(共第二节(共5小题;每小题小题;每小题2分,满分分,满分10 分)分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。 选项中有两项为多余选项。 All over the world people enjoy sports.
