Pat is making a birthday calendar. Koko is talking to her. Listen, look and say.Presentation1. Bring in a large wall calendar in English.2. Show the pupils the wall calendar. Say This is a calendar. Point to each month. Tell the pupils This is one month. Show the pupils and read aloud the names of the week from Sunday to Saturday. Teacher: There are seven days in a week. They are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.Tell the pupils to use and before the last item in the list.3. Ask the pupils How many months are there? Ask them to say after me the names of the months in order.T: There are twelve months in a year. They are January, February, March 4. Show Transparency. Play the Pupils Book Cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.Practice1. Read the conversation between Pat and Koko. Write st and say we have a special way of saying number one when its a date. We say first. Write the word first on the board. Ask the pupils to say the word after me.3. Repeat the procedure to teach second and third. Continue by showing the pupils how the spelling changes for fifth, ninth, twelfth and twentieth. Write 21, 22 and 23 underneath 1, 2 and 3. Ask the pupils to guess how we write twenty-first, twenty-second and twenty-third. Ask the pupils to guess how to spell thirtieth and how to change 31 into a date. Tell the pupils to count with me from first to thirty-first.4. Ask a pupil to stand up and tell the class My birthday is in (month). Invite the other pupils to guess when his/her birthday is. Model the way to ask by guessing myself, e.g. Is your birthday on June twenty-third? Check that the pupils are saying on rather than in and that the th at the end of the ordinal number is clear.Practice1. Show Transparency. Explain that Koko is asking her friends about their birthdays. Read Koko and Kens conversation and ask the pupils to repeat it after me.2. Ask the pupils a prediction question at the end of picture 3, What day is today? (Its Great-grandpas birthday.)2. Play the tape for the pupils and ask them to listen. Play the cassette again and ask them to say the sentences after the cassette.3. Ask the pupils to role-play the story in groups of four and to read the characters speech bubbles.D. Point to the pictures and check that the pupils can say the words.4. Play the cassette again. Ask the pupils to listen to the poem and then circle the same letters with the same sound. Get the pupils to repeat the poem.F. Make a birthday train.1. Ask the pupils to find friends with a birthday in the same month with them and get into groups.2. Within their groups, the pupils find out the birthdays of their group members in order to get into order of dates.3. Ask each pupil to cut out the train car on page 77 and write the date of their birthday on the carriage.4. Tell the pupils to line up in order of their birthdays and to present their train by saying who is the first, the second, the third and so on.G. Sing the song.Play the cassette for the pupils to listen to the song and then encourage them to join in with the words.H. Think about it!Ask the pupils how many birthdays Xiaoming has had (three). Pat is reading an e-mail from Jenny. Listen and read.1. Check that the pupils know what e-mail is. Show them that Jenny has sent the e-mail to Pat.2. Tell the pupils to join in with another pair so that four pupils are working together. Each pair takes turns to ask and answer questions about the special days they have chosen. They choose the best plan from the two pairs for the next step.4. One representative from each group of four tells the rest of the class what their chosen day is, when it is and what they plan to do. The class votes for the best plan.5. Ask the pupils to make a card for their special day.G. Listen, write and chant.Play the tape for the pupils to listen to the chant and encourage them to join in with the words. Then ask the pupils to complete the second verse by writing the correct words in the blanks.H.
