He has a good heart, but always feared applying for a new job. One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. Its the least I could do. Please. I insist.” Jimmy agreed. Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease (油脂) on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewers office with disappointed look on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmys heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmys surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was General Manager of the company. “Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into the office. I just know youd be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and they shared a cup of well-deserved coffee as he landed himself a new job. 4. Why did Jimmy apply for a new job? A. He needed a traveling companion.B. He was also to be interviewed. C. He always helped people in need.D. He was thankful to Jimmy. 7. What can we learn from Jimmys experience? A. Where there is a will, theres a way.B. A friend in need is a friend indeed. C. Two heads are better than one. D. Good is rewarded with good. CIt happened to me recently. I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obamas Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President. A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words, “a brilliantly written book”. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all. I sensed that I was talking to a book liar. And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they havent. In the World Book Days “Report on Guilty Secrets”, Dreams From My Father is at number 9. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as Im not one to lie too often (Id hate to be caught out), Ill admit here and now that I havent read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people, I have read the book at number one, George Orwells 1984. I think its really brilliant. The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I havent read him, but havent lied about it either) and Herman Melville.Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to “impress” someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth!But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (Ill come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).8. How did the author find his friend a book liar?A. By judging his manner of speaking.B. By mentioning a famous name.C. By looking into his background.D. By discussing the book itself.9. Which of the following is a “guilty secret” according to the World Book Day report?A. 42% of people pretended to have read 1984.B. Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list.C. The author admitted having read 9 books.D. Dreams From My Father is hardly read.10. By lying about reading, a person hopes to _.A. control the conversation.B. appear knowledgeable.C. learn about the book. D. make more friends.11. What is the authors attitude to 58% of readers?A. DoubtfulB. UncaringC. Favorable D. FriendlyDFear may be felt in the heart as well as in the head, according to a study that has found a link between the cycles of a beating heart and the chance of someone feeling fear.Tests on healthy volunteers found that they were more likely to feel a sense of fear at the moment when their hearts are contracting and pumping blood around their bodies, compared with the point when the heartbeat is relaxed. Scientists say the results suggest that the heart is able to influence how the brain responds to a fearful event, depending on which point it is at in its regular cycle of contraction and relaxation.Sarah Garfinkel at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School said, “Our study shows for the first time that the way in which we deal with fear is different depending on when we see fearful pictures in relation to our heart.”The study tested 20 healthy volunteers on their reactions to fear as they were shown pictures of fearful faces. Dr. Garfinkel said, “The study showed that fearful faces are better noticed when the heart is pumping than when it is relaxed. Thus our hearts can also affect what we see and what we dont see and guide whether we see fear.”To further understand this relationship, the scientists also used a brain scanner to show how the brain influences the way the heart changes a persons feeling of fear. “We have found an important mechanism by which the heart and brain speak to each other to change our feelings and reduce fear,” Dr. Garfinkel said.“We hope that by increasing our understanding about how fear is dealt with and ways that it could be reduced, we may be able to develop more successful treatments for anxiety disorders, and also for those who may be suffering from serious stress disorder.”12. What is the finding of the study?A. Fear is a result of ones relaxed heartbeat.B. Ones heart affects how he feels fear.C. Fear has something to do with ones health. D. Ones fast heartbeats are likely to cause fear.13. The study was carried out by analyzing _.A. volunteers heartbeats when they saw terrible pictures.B. the time volunteers saw fearful pictures and their health conditions. C. volunteers reactions to horrible pictures and data from their brain scans.D. different pictures shown to volunteers and their heart-brain communication.14. Which of the following is closest in meaning to “mechanism” in Paragraph 6? A. order B. system C. machine D. treatment15. This study may contribute to _. A. treating anxiety and stress better. B. explaining the cycle of fear and anxiety. C. finding the key to the heart-brain communication. D. understanding different fears in our hearts and heads.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。ForgivenessTo forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research. 16 Try the following steps:Calm yourself. 17 You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.Dont wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just dont see things the same way. 18 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.Take the control away from your offender. Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your mounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. 19 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offenders point of view.Dont forget to forgive yourself. 20 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you dont do it.A. How should you start to forgive?B. Why should you forgive?C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.D. Try to see things from you offenders angle.E.
