At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D).Passage OneThe gestures are used to emphasize an idea or emotion, especially while speaking. Gestures are of great help as people are in a lack of words while trying to express their thoughts, emotions and feelings. While one is talking, he or she considers every sentence and word. Before one says some words, he thinks them over in order not to hurt someone or say something wrong. The vocabulary of a person is rather broad and contains millions of words that help us to express anything we want. According to the scientists, the average person uses about thirteen thousand of words in his everyday communication. One may say that thirteen thousand is a rather big number, but consider the fact that the average dictionary of a certain language contains about 600,000 words. That means we dont use even a half of the words in our language. So, it is common that sometimes we are in a lack of words to express something. As it happens, we start to express our feelings through different gestures. Gestures are the reflection of inner feelings we have but not able to express or try to hide. So, the gestures are a silent language. During our entire life we are wearing masks that help us to hide the feelings and thoughts. But, no matter what a skilful liar a person is, no one is able to control his gestures.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.1.Gestures will help people _ to express their thoughts and feelings.Awho cannot speak a foreign languageBwho are not well educatedCwho are not good speakersDwho are in a lack of words2.Before one says some words, _.Aone makes sure they wont hurt peopleBone tries to use the simplest wordsCone makes sure that the grammar is correctDone uses gestures to tell what is to be said3.On average, how many words does one use in his daily communication?A13,000.B16,000.C30,000.D60,000.4.Gestures are the reflections of _.Aspoken languageBdaily problemsCour moodsDhidden feelings5.What cant be controlled no matter how skillful one is?AManners.BBehaviors.CGestures.DPronunciations.Passage TwoIt may be a question whether work is a cause of happiness. There is certainly much work which is troublesome, and too much work is always very painful. But I think that even the most boring work is less painful to most people than no work at all. There are different kinds of work, according to the nature of the work and the abilities of the worker. Most of the work that most people have to do is not in itself interesting, but even such work has certain great advantages. To begin with, it fills the day without the need of deciding what one shall do. Most people, when they are left free to fill their own time, are at a loss to think of anything pleasant to be worth doing. And whatever they decide on, they are troubled by the feeling that something else would have been more pleasant. Whats more, always having to make a choice is very troublesome. For many common people, it is better to be told what to do at each hour of the day. Most of the rich people who have no work to do suffer a kind of boredom. At times they may find relief by hunting in Africa, or by flying round the world, but the number of such experiences is limited. So the clever rich people work as hard as if they were poor to kill the bad feelings.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.1.To most people, the most boring work is _ than no work at all.Amore painfulBno more painfulCas painful asDless painful2.What is TRUE about most work that most people do?AThey are not very interesting.BThey cause unhappiness.CThey are troublesome.DThey are exciting.3.For most people, when they are free to fill their own time, they will probably _.Anot know what is worth doingBknow how to kill the timeCfill their time wellDget lost in the streets4.Work has certain advantages because _.Ait keeps people healthyBpeople can be told what to do at every hour of the dayCpeople find a reason to enjoy their vacationsDeveryone should work5.What do the clever rich people do to kill the bad feelings of boredom?AThey travel around the world.BThey seek adventures in Africa.CThey work hard.DThey watch others work.可跳过不做:(Directions: In this section, you will hear several sentences.
